Raid Level select for HPUX 11.23 running SAP R/3

Dear Gurus,

curent w are having 2 HPUX servers in clusters running SGeSAP(SAP R/3) and one SAP BW Server .all these setup connected on HP VA7110 with autoraid configured ...Due to space crunch we are going to replace the storage and purchased CX700 .As a system administrator which raid group to be suggested for This production servers to have better performance(compared to current setup) ...what are the other possible best practises ?

With enough space the VA7110 does striped mirroring for current data - I would suggest to do the same now.

Hi Torsten,

we are going to replace VA 7110 and going to put CX700 ..As per my understanding RAID 1 luns for production is good or RAID 5 luns ...
since in storage they are creating two storage group RAID 1 and RAID 5 .

The AUTORAID is something special, fresh data is hold in fast RAID1, older data is converted into RAID5 to save space. As long as there is enough sapce all the data is hold in RAID1.

In general (theory) a RAID1 has faster writes than a RAID5, because there are no calculations needed, a RAID5 has faster reads because of more disks.

This is theory, since a striped RAID1 has also a lot of disks it may read as fast as a RAID5 do, so the speed advantage of a RAID1 writes remains.
