Rolling upgrades on 2 Node clusters

I am going to be applying HPUX patch bundles to several two (2) Node Service guard clusters.

Since there are only two nodes in each cluster is there any Service Guard precautions I need to take before upgrading ?

Do I need to halt the node I am going to upgrade first ?

My plan was to upgrade one server while the package remains running on the other, then after it's back up, move the package over to the newly patched server and then patch the other server.

Re: Rolling upgrades on 2 Node clusters

Sounds OK to me

1. Move packages to 2nd node
2. run cmhaltnode to stop primary node
3. Apply patches and restart.

Only thing to bear in mind is if ANY of the patches were for serviceguard make sure you issue any serviceguard commands from the patched node rather than the other node until that one is also upgraded.

just repeat the operation for the other node

Re: Rolling upgrades on 2 Node clusters

Will the patch bundle force a system reboot, or will it update Serviceguard? If yes - then cmhaltnode that node first. That will force any packages running on it to fail to the adoptive node (assuming you want this).

If neither a reboot nor Serviceguard-related files will not be patched, then the node need not be brought out of the cluster, nor packages halted.

If you are patching Serviceguard with a patch released in Oct 2004, definitely read the Special Installation Instructions associated with the patch (get the re-posted patch documentation with the patch:
