root user & password

What is the best way to retrieve or amend the root password if it is ever lost,
or changed by mistake. I never anticipate this happening, and already have a
secondary 'root' equivalent user created on the system in case, but wondered if
there are any other methods ?

Re: root user & password

If you have physical access to an untrusted host, you could power cycle the
machine, interupt the boot process and go into single-user mode and modify the
root passwd without needing the root passwd.

Trusted Systems still require the root passwd to get into single user mode.
Contact the HP Response Center to get any further information regarding lost
root passwords on trusted systems.
(Those kind of security answers probably shouldn't be posted in this forum,
imho)

Re: root user & password

Hello,
you can boot into single user mode and can change your password.

When you are booting your machine
interrupt at boot sequence

interact with ISL>yes
ISL>hpux -is

Thanks

Re: root user & password

When you have got a trusted system, there is password on single user also.

Re: root user & password

Simon

A secont root password/user is a security risk and the apparent peace of mind it gives is far outweighted by having this second root level user.

As already stated a lost root password can be sorted by a reboot.
