Tool for Network documentation?

Tool for Network documentation?

Is there any freeware tool available, which will produce a documentation of our network?

For Linux there is a tool called Cheops (http://www.marko.net/cheops/index.shtml) which produces a nice graphical documantation. I tried but faild to build this tool on HP-UX :-(

Is there something similar available or has somebody found binaries of Cheops for HP-UX?

There is no binary at the HP-UX Porting Center.

Thanks in advance. Regards Stefan

Re: Tool for Network documentation?

We use Visio.
Not free and a lot of manual work but easy to maintain after the initial data.

NNM, Network Node Manager produces a graphical display, but it is not free and is difficult if not impossible to print for large networks.

Re: Tool for Network documentation?

Hi,

Hope this software on the link displayed below will help you. This software works in Windows 95.

http://smartdraw2.com/network2.htm

Also,if you have manageable network components on your network you can use any Network Management software.

Good luck.

Re: Tool for Network documentation?

Thanks for your replys, but as far as i know these tools you mentioned are some kind of drawingsoftware.

I was looking for something that is able to scan the actual network and then create some kind of map of the network.

As mentioned Cheops should be able to do so, but i haven't been able to compile it. Here is the output of configure:

checking for gcc... gcc
checking whether the C compiler (gcc ) works... yes
checking whether the C compiler (gcc ) is a cross-compiler... no
checking whether we are using GNU C... yes
checking whether gcc accepts -g... yes
checking for a BSD compatible install... /opt/imake/bin/install -c
checking how to run the C preprocessor... gcc -E
checking for ANSI C header files... yes
checking for fcntl.h... yes
checking for sys/ioctl.h... yes
checking for sys/time.h... yes
checking for unistd.h... yes
checking for working const... yes
checking for size_t... yes
checking whether time.h and sys/time.h may both be included... yes
checking for ucd-snmp... no. -- snmp disabled
checking for gtk... yes
checking for dn_expand in -lc... yes
checking for dlopen in -ldl... no
checking for g_module_open in -lgmodule... no
./configure[1368]: test: Specify a parameter with this command.
./configure[1372]: test: Specify a parameter with this command.
Must have gmodule or dlopen

Clearly here is a lib missing. But i do have a libgmodule in /opt/glib/lib. The PATH is set to this directory. Does it expect something else?

So i'm still looking for the binaries of Cheops or a compareable software.

Thanks for your help. Regards Stefan

Re: Tool for Network documentation?

Are you wanting Network Node Manger (NNM)

It was (or still is) part of the Openview or it may now be considered part of the Vantage group of products.
But this will map your network and displays it via a nice GUI screen. It allows you to set up alerts and perform some network checks, etc.

Just a thought,

Re: Tool for Network documentation?

Hi,

i also tried to compiling cheops.
The configure script had run successfully with:
PATH=$PATH:/opt/gcc/bin:/opt/gtk+/bin:/opt/glib/bin
But when i run /opt/make/gmake i get an error:
gmake: *** [cheops.o] Error 1

Still looking for fixing ....

Re: Tool for Network documentation?

Rita:

As i am not allowed to buy any tool like this i can't afford OpenView. But perhaps there is a trial version of NNM. Unfortunately i could not find any download source for NNM. Actually i didn't find any information on NNM at software.hp.com. (Perhaps my bad english is keeping me from finding.) Could you please provide me a link?

Andreas:

At least you got one step further. Please keep trying. Im not able to create a program with more then "Hello World", but you are. If you succeed i would be really glad if you could provide me the binaries or a step by step description.

Stefan

Re: Tool for Network documentation?

Hi Stefan,

I saw a Linux tool named Scotty, which was quite nice. Unfortunately I was not to deply involved, so I do not know where to get it, but I think it is part of either RedHat or Suse editions ?!?!?

Concerning you compiler messages. If you suspect a lib-problem, why do you play with PATH ? Shouldn't it be LIBPATH to be set ?

In addition, LIBPATH could be overwritten by entries in the make-files, so you should grep your makefiles for this, and as usally there are nested variables, it may require a little bit of hunting.

For debugging purposes, I would replace the compiler (gcc ?) with a script, plotting the environment and the commandline-params. This might show you some information, where to adjust.

Good luck

Re: Tool for Network documentation?

Volker,

i found and downloaded scotty. Unfortunately you have to compile this also. And again im stuck with some errors i can't resolve :-( Think i need to take a programming class.

But I am still working on it. But for now i'm not able to tell if this is what i am looking for. I will be back to assign your points as soon as i know more.

Re: Tool for Network documentation?

Volker,

i still can't get scotty to work. But i found that scotty has a discovery option which should be what i am looking for. So i will keep trying.

Printaporn,

(what a name) this mrtg is a nice tool but won't help me much here. I need a tool which is able to automatically draw me a map of our network.

Richard,

thanks for this script. I have something pretty similar running here for a periodical inventory of our Workstations. Unfortunately we have also a lot of windows PC's and some MAC's. And unfortunately there is nearly no documentation on our network :-(

Hope there is somebody out there who can help me run cheops or scotty.

Re: Tool for Network documentation?

Hi,

Just scanned this thread, and saw someone looking for a download of OpenView Network Node Manager.

It's available from www.openview.com, you can even order the medias for free.

It is a very nice tool for drawing your network, only problem is getting it out on paper ;)

If you install this trial, it will work for 60 days.

I hope this helps
