Using swinstall - Zip

1. Can swinstall handle zip files?

2. Does it make any sense to NOT use swinstall to install software?

Hi,

>Can swinstall handle zip files?
No.

>Does it make any sense to NOT use swinstall to install software?
No, you have to use std procedures to install softwares or you can use SAM.
Will it remain a personal, if I broadcast it here!

Re: Using swinstall - Zip

1) if you download depots from ITRC in zip format you need to unzip them prior to run swinstall

2)No. You can copy or even extract the files, but you need to use swinstall (SAM is calling swinstall too) to install the software.
Why do you ask this question - any background for this?

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: Using swinstall - Zip

I want to install Flex Data Services and Geronimo. A specific Flex bundle is available for HP-Ux in zip format.

Re: Using swinstall - Zip

swinstall can only handle "depot" formats and depots can only be installed with swinstall.

Several third party products may use a different method to install, you so probably need to use the installer that comes with the software.

Hope this helps!

As torsten said, you need to unzip it prior to install.

Swell. And only you know where you got it,
and what's in it, so it's difficult for
anyone else to guess what you should do after
you unpack its contents.

Output from "unzip -t whatever.zip" might be
more informative than nothing (which is
approximately what you've disclosed so far).

Re: Using swinstall - Zip

Hi BIll:

> Does it make any sense to NOT use swinstall to install software?

It makes sense to _USE_ 'swinstall'. The SD suite (of which 'swinstall' is a key member) _records_ the patches and products it installs in the IPD (Installed Product Database) represented by the contents of the '/var/adm/sw' tree.

When properly deployed, one can find (list and query), upgrade, enforce dependencies and remove software! This is the goal of any package manager. To simply unzip/untar and copy software in a standalone manner to affect installation is poor to say the least!

Regards!

Re: Using swinstall - Zip

The free Flex Data Services (FDS) bundle is at Adobe. It is free, but it requires a user.id/pw.

When I unzipped it, there were tons of files and I did not see a "readme" or installation instructions.

FDS requires JEE so I am trying to install JEE before FDS.

The HP Java link routed me to the Sun Developer network. I posted the JEE install question there.

Re: Using swinstall - Zip

I would hope that most HP-UX software and patches are already released within compressed depots. If you think you have software that needs compression:

# swcopy -s /fatDepot -x compress_files=true \* @ /thinDepot

That should give you *most* of the compression of a zipped depot, but is still directly installable.
