what is rpcd process

Dear Sir,
I see a process "rpcd" with my 6 unix servers,
info is blow:
CPU TTY PID USERNAME PRI NI SIZE RES STATE TIME %WCPU %CPU COMMAND
5 ? 971 root 241 20 11096K 1964K run 10523:01 99.73 99.55 rpcd

-----------
What's functionality with that ?
Can I kill it?

Re: what is rpcd process

Have you bothered to do a man rpcd? It's the Remote Procedure Call daemon. It enables programs on remote hosts to execute functions on the local host and then return the results. Can you kill this daemon? Yes, absolutely. Should you? That depends. For example, NFS uses RPC.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: what is rpcd process

Thank you for reply .

We real started NFS before.
But we not use that now.

I think I know what's that ,
and how to treat this ,

thank you very much again .

Re: what is rpcd process

You should note than NFS is just one of the applications that uses RPC.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Hi

Just to add to that point HP Openview OVO (ITO)and OV Measureware (OVPA) both rely on the rpcd daemon.

Re: what is rpcd process

hi, man !

i have the same problem as you do! my CU complained about the HPUX server is really slow, and i took a look at it,

here is it:

CPU TTY PID USERNAME PRI NI SIZE RES STATE TIME %WCPU %CPU COMMAND
1 ? 1025 root 239 20 11116K 3148K run 2210:25 99.02 98.85 rpcd

i wonder if this is related with some CU application software (they do have build up a backup software system recently), and i choose not to kill this process, i asked CU to appeal to application support personels.

but i still wonder:does this relate to the OS or application?

thankyou

Re: what is rpcd process

Hi,
From point of here,i think if rpcd
makes %WCPU %99 then the system seems to need "patch management"
