Why will HP-UX not run on generic ia64 hardware?
Hi
I know this topic has been brought up several times but I need to explain to managment exactly why our HP-UX 11.31 for ia64 (running on rx7640's) cannot and will not run on generic ia64 hardware.
I have some ia64 systems based on the Hitachi Cold Fusion-3e chipset.
What exactly stops HP-UX for ia64 from running on this ia64 hardware?
Is it just the lack of driver support for the chipset or are there other underlying hardware incompatibilities?
I need details from someone who knows hardware/kernel interaction.
HP's generic answers about HP-UX only being supported on HP9000 and HP Integrity hardware is not going to cut it because management wants to know why it won't work from a technical perspective.
Thanks!

Re: Why will HP-UX not run on generic ia64 hardware?
I'm sure it supports only the specific chipsets used in the supported Integrity and HP9000 hardware (sx2, sx2000 for example).
I remember HP-UX was/is running on third party hardware from NEC and Stratus, the HP rx9610 was a NEC too, ARAIR.
20 years ago it was running on Convex until HP aquired them.
But HP made it available for this special platforms.
However, I don't see any reason to run it on a generic platform.
What would be the use of running a productive system in a 100% unsupported environment?
IMHO it will not run anyway.
It would also be a question of license, too.
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

How old are these? I do find:
Dual-Core Itanium® 2 processor 9100 Series based Platforms: Intel® S6E5100 SDP Hitachi Cold Fusion*-3e, Chipset Hitachi ColdFusion3e,

Hi,
CPU is not everything,
There is probably , io tree presentation, bus adaptor drivers, io drivers ....
