mgetty error...

all,
I am running a serial console between remote linux servers. I am seeing this error, aproximately one hours apart:
07/08 16:19:50 yS0 mgetty: experimental test release 1.1.26-Apr16
07/08 16:19:50 yS0 check for lockfiles
07/08 16:19:50 yS0 locking the line
07/08 16:19:51 yS0 WARNING: DSR is off - modem turned off or bad cable?
07/08 16:19:51 yS0 lowering DTR to reset Modem
07/08 16:19:52 yS0 waiting...
07/08 16:19:54 ##### failed dev=ttyS0, pid=2304, got signal 1, exiting

Is this normal, if not what is causing and how do I fix it. Thanks.

mgetty appears to think you have a modem connected, and is attempting to manipulate the DTR line. Not necessary with a dumb terminal.

Check section 6.4 of this link, it deals with configuring mgetty for a direct serial connection.

according to section 6.4, the config is correct, here's what is in my mgetty conf file:
port ttyS0
speed 57600
direct yes
data-only yes
toggle-dtr yes
need-dsr yes
port-owner root
port-group root
port-mode 600
login-prompt @ \P login:\040
login-time 60

Sorry, upon further inspection thats the setup for a dumb modem. Maybe try disabling need-dsr and toggle-dtr? Also check section 11 to verify correct wiring of your cable.
