ssh help

Let me try again...was in the wrong forum to begin with...


I'm working on a linux server and have just installed the latest ssh 5.1 on my box. Files were installed in /usr/local/bin and /usr/local/etc.

The executable was installed in /usr/local/sbin/sshd. When I reboot the ssh doesn't come up. What do I need to do so ssh comes up when I reboot.

Any help will be appreciated.

Please state the distribution of Linux.

If its red hat, it is not compatible with openssh 5.1, the latest supported is:

[root@bersheva gdm]# rpm -qa | grep openssh
openssh-askpass-4.3p2-26.el5_2.1
openssh-server-4.3p2-26.el5_2.1
openssh-4.3p2-26.el5_2.1
openssh-clients-4.3p2-26.el5_2.1

The old startup script (likely /etc/init.d/sshd) is probably no longer working. I would see if you have something in '/usr/local/etc/init.d/sshd', and either adapt that script, adapt the existing /etc/init.d/ script, or just add '/usr/local/bin/sshd -args' to /etc/rc.local. Not the ideal situation, but might at least get things working for you.

Ideally, I would recompile sshd not to install to the /usr/local prefix, and package it up according to your distribution's package management system.
