Is there any firewal, that you have to cross ?
check the telnet service from the server itself using
#telnet 127.0.0.1

Which is fast?? May be name resolution is problem. Do you use dns for host resolution?? How does resolv.conf look like??

As quick&dirty workaround you can add client's hostname/address to /etc/hosts on ftp server

I managed to solved the problem. I have to modify some files into /etc/nsswitch.conf.

and also have a look in /etc/resolve.conf file .. if u have proper entry in that..
