Microsoft Windows HPE OEM licensing on VMware
Hello,
We sold to a customer two DL360Gen10 (total of 20 cores) and 2 HPE OEM Windows 2022 Datacenter licenses (HPE p/n P45916-B21 - Microsoft Windows Server 2022 16-core Datacenter FIO) to cover all physical cores. The customer has more than 10 virtual machines that can be moved between two hosts.
Quickspecs says: "Datacenter edition permits unlimited virtualized Operating System instances (VMs) and Hyper-V containers on a server when all physical cores in the server are licensed"
The question is whether the activation key for the two datacenter licenses can also be applied to all the vms I create in the infrastructure, or do these licenses only give the right to run an infinite number of vms, which must have their own license though.
Thanks in advance
Best regards
Davide

Re: Microsoft Windows HPE OEM licensing on VMware
Hi Davide,
The activation key for the two Datacenter licenses cannot be directly applied to all the VMs. These licenses provide the right to run an unlimited number of Windows Server virtual machines on the licensed physical hosts, but each VM must still be individually activated.
Fyi,
The two OEM Datacenter licenses give your customer the right to run unlimited VMs on the licensed servers.
However, to activate the VMs, either AVMA or other activation methods must be used.
The Datacenter license activation key cannot directly activate the VMs; it only activates the host.
I hope this gives the insights of your question. Let me know if you need more help.
