Configuring a DecServer 90M+

I am trying to configure a DecServer 90M+, but I'm having problem connecting into it. Below is the error message recived

If I remember right... Try disconnecting it from the network, so it can't/will not issue a MOP request and configure it from a terminal connected locally to port 1.

90M+ take quite a few minutes to complete their self test etc. so be patient too !

You DECserver is trying to download its operating software via the network using MOP.
Is there a load host for the DECserver somewhere?

Actually if you look closely, it's attempting to download it's image via TFTP not MOP/Decnet.

Same end result, no load host to get it's os from.

You need to get the firmware image onto a system that you can configure TFTP on, several free programs out there (I can't remember the name of one I used to use but it's icon was a pumpkin!).

Well spotted Art ! I thought DS90M's tried to download their s/w but upon failure or no network they executed the op/sys from flash memory ?

If I remember correctly they usually try MOP first, then move on to BOOTP/DTFTP. If the image that's been selected is in the FLASH then it should boot from flash.

So, try resetting it to factory defaults (press the button on the back in while power-cycling it and wait for about 10 seconds befor releaseing the button), then observe what happens on Port 1 output.

I think the flash memory is an option so may not be present or its not valid.

I had a problem like this once. You can download a BOOTP server and run it on a LAN and set it to broadcast to the DECServer. A new version of the firmware is available from HP/DEC support or from other places on the internet.

If memory serves me, when you perform a factory reset on the DECServer, it defaults back to loading the firmware from it's internal flash memory. This DECServer may have been previously used in an environment where it was loading the firmware from a host.

I currently sypport this product. The product appears to be the first release but should be fine. I don't understand why the DECserver is not booting from flash.

If you have an TFTP server with the image available, MNENG4, you can at the point where you see the messages printed on the screen during boot, press ctrl (hold it down) and press B B. This should get you to the 3 carrot prompt >>>.

Enter H and get the help message. There is a new feature that will allow you to upgrade the image directly to to flash, b/u (remember you need a TFTP server). If you get that far and have the MNBOOT image, you can also upgrade the boot code, now located in flash memory. You will have to to use the image command during the b/u command string.
