NTP and SNMP services don't start automatically after a reboot

Good morning,

I'm new in the forum. I'm telecom administrator engineer. ;0)

I have a problem with my 7 (ES40) nodes. (3 nodes are Back end in cluster, and 4 are single front END)
Recently, the node have been upgrades to OpenVMS 7.3-2 with the TCPIP stack V5.4 - ECO 5

have configured corretly the NTP on the 7 node. The process is running fine when i start it manually but does NOT start automatically in case of reboot (crash or something else)
the only info i have in the operator.log is the following

%%%%%%%%%%% OPCOM 1-FEB-2007 11:32:10.76 %%%%%%%%%%%
Message from user INTERnet on XXXXX
INTERnet ACP NOLISTEN Process creation success: Service - NTP

%%%%%%%%%%% OPCOM 1-FEB-2007 11:32:11.41 %%%%%%%%%%%
Message from user INTERnet on XXXX
INTERnet ACP Error during process startup, Nolisten Service Disabled - FTP Server

i found the following memo but did not help
http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=947807

XXXX:SYSTEM> ps ntp
OpenVMS V7.3-2 on node XXXX 1-FEB-2007 11:57:31.56 Uptime 0 00:26:20
0000022D VIQ_NTP_V353 HIB 15 38101 0 00:00:01.41 442 232

you see the process is not started.

i start it manually

Hello

Check that the uic of the user Tcpip$ntp is the same as the owner of the files in SYS$SYSDEVICE:

or post

mc authorize sh tcpip$ntp
dir/sec SYS$SYSDEVICE:

Post the same replacing ntp by snmp

Re: NTP and SNMP services don't start automatically after a reboot

... also consider to look into the TCPIP service .LOG files in the approriate directories for any error messages. The log files are typically found in:

SYS$SYSROOT:TCPIP$NTP_RUN.LOG
SYS$SYSDEVICE:[TCPIP$SNMP]TCPIP$SNMP_RUN.LOG

Re: NTP and SNMP services don't start automatically after a reboot

You seem to have a problem in your startup sequence and your SYLOGIN.COM !

You seem to invoke some procedures (PYTHON-related) from your SYLOGIN.COM. At startup time of TCPIP - typically early during SYSTARTUP_VMS.COM - some required logicals are not set up yet and your login-procedures fail/terminate - preventing some of the TCPIP services processes from starting correctly.

When you laster manually start these TCPIP services, the logicals are set and the services can be started successfully.

Re: NTP and SNMP services don't start automatically after a reboot

An easy workaround would be this:

Find the DCL procedure containing these commands:

...
$ deftmpdir := "$ python_root:[vms.bin]deftmpdir"
$ deftmpdir "/"
...

Change them to:

...
$ IF F$TRNLNM("python_root") .NES. ""
$ THEN
$ deftmpdir := "$ python_root:[vms.bin]deftmpdir"
$ deftmpdir "/"
$ ENDIF
...

Re: NTP and SNMP services don't start automatically after a reboot

You should have either

-in your sylogin (check where is the file showed by "sh lo sys$sylogin", usually it is sys$manager:sylogin.com)

- or in the login.com

of an account using python something like

$ @ python_root:[vms]setup

so that all python logicals are defined and then
$ python
gives a python prompt and not an error

Re: NTP and SNMP services don't start automatically after a reboot

very strange

i have compared the sylogin.com on the 2 7nodes
and there is no difference at all. so i don't understand the workaround.

Re: NTP and SNMP services don't start automatically after a reboot

sh lo sys$sylogin
"SYS$SYLOGIN" = "SYS$MANAGER:SYLOGIN" (LNM$SYSTEM_TABLE)
XXX:SYSTEM> dir sys$manager:sylogin.com

Directory SYS$COMMON:[SYSMGR]

SYLOGIN.COM;2

Total of 1 file.

Re: NTP and SNMP services don't start automatically after a reboot

Let me re-phrase your problem:

When starting TCPIP during system startup, the PYTHON$ROOT logical name is NOT YET DEFINED !

I some of your login-procedures (i.e. in SYLOGIN.COM or some procedures IT CALLS !), you are using the python$root logical name at a time when it's not yet defined. This causes that login-procedure to abort/terminate and prevents some of those TCPIP services from starting.

The error may be in SYLOGIN.COM itself. If they are all the same, the error is in some other procedure called during login...

You might want to put a SET VERIFY into SYLOGIN.COM and execute it manually to find out, which procedure tries to use the PYTHON$ROOT logical..

Re: NTP and SNMP services don't start automatically after a reboot

YYOOUUPPIIIII The problem is fixed

I don't need your workaround

Probably something was not done during the upgrade

I compared two files
XXXX:SYSTEM> diff SYS$COMMON:[PYTHON.VMS]SETUP.COM XXXX7::SYS$COMMON:[PYTHON.VMS]SETUP.COM /par
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
File SYS$COMMON:[PYTHON.VMS]SETUP.COM;2 | File
XXXX7::SYS$COMMON:[PYTHON.VMS]SETUP.COM;1
------------------------------- 30 ---------------------------------------------------------- 30 ----------------------------
$! deftmpdir := "$ python_root:[vms.bin]deftmpdir" | $ deftmpdir := "$ python_root:[vms.bin]deftmpdir"
$! deftmpdir "/" | $ deftmpdir "/"
$! define/noLOG TMPDIR "''TMPDIR'" | $ define/noLOG TMPDIR "''TMPDIR'"
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So i comment the tree lines and after the reboot the SNMP and NTP process are up and running

OpenVMS V7.3-2 on node SMFT47 1-FEB-2007 13:29:17.84 Uptime 0 00:01:44
