Re: Creating New file system Using Extra Disk

Hi,

you can put a disklabel on each disk and create a file domain on each, you can start a file domain on one disk and use addvol to add the other disks or you could combine several disks into one by the hsz70.

Re: Creating New file system Using Extra Disk

I guess my real question is since my file systems is advfs and I do not have the lm pack to create another advfs file domain so a.) should i just add the disks to the present file domains or
b.) should I /can I create a ufs file domain with the remaining disks? Will the two different domains be able to interact?

I tried creating a file domain (data_domain) using sysman but I was unsuccessful in adding a volume to it, so I deleted it.

Re: Creating New file system Using Extra Disk

Maybe I should just add the disks to the root domain and load the data on root? Its about 13GB. What do you think Mike/Ralf?

Re: Creating New file system Using Extra Disk

Hi,

did you add the rest of the licenses to the system? Can you post lmf after doing that?
How much space do you need for the data in one spot.
If you do not need it all in one spot, you can also create a domain on each disk.
How many disks do you have attached to the hsz70?

Re: Creating New file system Using Extra Disk

to add more than one disk to a volume you need the "advfs utilities" license. Another approach is to use a raid controller or LSM, but LSM requires also an license.

Since Tru64 future is counted, buy a license which is the cheapest and easiest way.

Re: Creating New file system Using Extra Disk

Hi,

one alternative. Since the commands, like addvol and rmvol are rarely used, if you have another machine with an advfs-utilities license, consider to temporarely transfer a license.

Re: Creating New file system Using Extra Disk

Hi,

by labelling those disks you can create new file systems.

#diskconfig
allows you to label the disk
(here i assume it as dsk2a)

#mkfdmn /dev/disk/dsk2a test
#mkfset test test_fs
#mount -t advfs test#test_fs

make an entry in /etc/fstab
never give up

Re: Creating New file system Using Extra Disk

1.)Labeled dsk5
2.)added addl lm packs

# cd /usr/sbin
# ./addvol /dev/dsk/dsk5c usr_domain

Re: Creating New file system Using Extra Disk

Paul,

you have to temporarely transfer a advfs-utilities license from another host and install it on that machine and delete it after that. I hope, you have that somewhere?
Do you know how to programme the hsz70?
There you could add the disks into one volume too.

I do not have any other box with an advfs utilities licenes. No I have never programmed the hsz70. I guess I am stuck !!!

I think I have LSM installed? Could that help me?

Re: Creating New file system Using Extra Disk

Paul,

you may have lsm installed, but for certain things you need an extra lsm license, which according to your last lmf list, you don't have. Have you looked for an advfs-utilties license? If you don't have one, we can try to programme the hsz70.

Re: Creating New file system Using Extra Disk

Paul,

first I want to have the current configuration of the hsz70 subsystem.
hwmgr -show scsi
/usr/lbin/hsxterm5 -b X -t X -l X
just take one of the hsz70 disks.
Then post as attachment.
show this full
show disk full
show mirror full

thanks,

Michael

Not sure I clearly understand what you are advising me to do. An example would be nice (dsk5). I am still relatively new to the OS. Thanks

Re: Creating New file system Using Extra Disk

Paul,

hsxterm5 is a programme to access the command line interface(cli) of the hsz70

You call hsxterm5 -b x -t x -l x
b=bus, t=target, l=lun
in your case for example
41: 5 AlphaServe disk none 2 1 dsk4 [1/3/0]
hsxterm5 -b 1 -t 3 -l 0
Once you have the prompt, type these commands and post the asa attachment:
show this full
show disk full
show mirror full

I assume, dsk4-8 are free to use?

Michael

ps. You still didn't answer, how much space do you need for user data in one place?
Are there files bigger than one disk or do the data have to be in one directory?

Re: Creating New file system Using Extra Disk

See new attachment I figure it out. Files are 13GB so that is a little less than one entire disk (18Gb)

Re: Creating New file system Using Extra Disk

Paul,

I did review your attachment and what I saw, I didn't like. Who configured the machine before you? This is not an easy task anymore. There does not seem to be one mirrored disk. This is almost too much, to be handled over the forum. I would need detailed description about, how you want to use the machine, sys_check file and more. This could be a days job on your site, but with this distance between us.

So please tell me, are there any dead lines you have? Are there any collegues you can talk to? I would like to help, but I wonder, if this is going to work. How could they give you such a job without proper training.

Honestly, I am frustrated. :-(

Re: Creating New file system Using Extra Disk

They and I presumed that since I had experience with HP-UX 10.20, 11.0 it would not be that different but it is. I really dont have any contacts to work with regarding the machine. Is it because I chose to go with the advfs over the ufs or would it have made a difference?

Re: Creating New file system Using Extra Disk

Paul,

this would make no difference, advfs is fine. Now I see, that even with an advfs-utilities license, it wouldn't be better. I wonder, if even the system disks are mirrored. I assumed, that with a redundant hsz70 configuration it would have mirrored disks but obviuosly it has not.

To bring this to a success, we would have to work closely together outside this forum by email.

So, what do you think? The alternative would be ordering someone from HP, who can help you setup the machine in such a way, you can use it.
