CD-ROM install?

I have a CD-ROM drive currently installed, but that has been shot and will not work anymore. I also have encountered a problem where I need to reinstall windows, but need a CD-ROM drive to do so. How can install my backup CD-ROM from the MSDOS command prompt? If someone could perhaps direct me to a tutorial of some sort I would greatly appreciate it.

Re: CD-ROM install?

You replaced the original, faulty CD-ROM drive with a new one and now you want to use it from DOS mode?

You'll need a "real mode" driver which probably came with the new drive and has a name something like brand_cd.sys If you didn't get a driver disk, just try one of the generic atapi.sys drivers. This gets loaded in config.sys and then you reference that driver with the mscdex.exe command in your autoexec.bat
At boot you should see a message about the driver loading and a letter being assigned to the drive.
