Extend the Primary Partition on HP ProLiant DL 360 Gen 9 SAS

Hello all, 

I want to extend our primary partion on our SAS server it's a raid 1 with 300GB SAS drives.

We tried to purchase addtional drives to combine them but our vendor said it wasn't feasible.

They suggested we buy 1 tb drive let it replicate and then move it to the primary postition and add another 1tb to mirror it back to. 
IS the best way? Is there a walkthrough for this?

Hello,

If the primary partition has to be extended which is in Raid 1, the recommended way is to recreate the logical drive with higher capacity drives and reinstall the operating system or restore from the backup image.

But the way your vendor said can also be done .but please do backup the data before you start the procedure.

You can replace the drives with larger drives, then expand the array, and finally expand the OS partition

Make sure you have a valid backup of your data before you begin, most array controllers require a cache module before this opertion can be performed.

Replace one drive in the array. The data on the new drive is re-created from redundant information on the
remaining drives. CAUTION: Do not replace any other drive until data rebuild on this drive is complete.

Repeat the previous step for the other drives in the array, one at a time.

When you have replaced all drives, you can use the extra capacity to either create new logical drives or
extend existing logical drives

Refer to your OS documentaition on how to modify or expand and existing partition.

As others have mentioned, it can sometime be quicker to backup your data, install the new drive, create an array, install the OS, and restore from backup as teh above method is a slow process.
