HELP PLEASE - HP DL385 G1 - Degraded Ram Error
Hi all,
i' ve a problem with my HP PROLIANT DL385 G1
- 1 AMD OPTERON 280 2,4 ghz
- FIRMWARE UPDATE FROM FW910C.2010_0819.4.iso
- 2x SCSI 36,4 15k HD
- 4x SCSI 72,8 15k HD
- 2x redundand PSU
Today i want to add some ram - from actual 1GB (2x Samsung PC3200 400 ECC) + (2x Micron PC3200 400 ECC) to 8GB of Ram (n. 4 x MICRON MT36VDDF25672Y-40BD2 - 2GB, DDR, 400, CL3, ECC, REG, HP PN:373030-851).
When i turn on the server it detects and check the ram correctly, but 2 minutes after boot the FRONT SYSTEM DEGRADED LED starts flashing AMBER.
if i install only 2 bank of ram the system works correctly, but so i've only 4gb of rams.
If i change the position of the banks the situation doesn't change.
Can someone help me?
Thanks in advance.
PS: sorry for my bad english.
Marco

Re: HELP PLEASE - HP DL385 G1 - Degraded Ram Error
Hello, how many mamery modules do you want tu use? If you have only one CPU installed, you can use only memory slots belonging to installed CPU.
See server quickspec at http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/productbulletin.html#spectype=worldwide&type=html&docid=12162

Re: HELP PLEASE - HP DL385 G1 - Degraded Ram Error
Tanks Jan for the reply.
Well, i want to use 4modules x 2GB each one: 4x (Micron MT36VDDF25672Y-40BD2) HP-CERT PN:373030-851
I' ve only one processor installed, so i use only the four banks near the processor.
I attach you a photo of the server running configuration.
Tanks a lot.

Re: HELP PLEASE - HP DL385 G1 - Degraded Ram Error
Hello Marco,
thanks for answer. Using your modules (4x2GB) should be fine. As in your case there is problem, let's follow my sugestions:
1) are you sure modules are OK? - tested in other server? Could you run memory test from HP smartstart cd or 3rd party Memtest x86?
2) is there anything related written in IML log in ilo?
3) try to identify what is exact problem by checking internal system board leds. Here - http://h20566.www2.hp.com/portal/site/hpsc/template.BINARYPORTLET/public/kb/docDisplay/resource.process/?spf_p.tpst=kbDocDisplay_ws_BI&spf_p.rid_kbDocDisplay=docDisplayResURL&javax.portlet.begCacheTok=com.vignette.cachetoken&spf_p.rst_kbDocDisplay=wsrp-resourceState%3DdocId%253Demr_na-c00291791-2%257CdocLocale%253D&javax.portlet.endCacheTok=com.vignette.cachetoken is maintenance guide for your server, check pages 77/78 a identify which module / bank causes the problem. Then swap them if the problem travels with module/modules. Maybe one modelu has ECC problem and is somehow damaged
4) are you able to start and run OS and the HP utils like HP SMH ?
I wish you good luck with tests
Jan
