How to Extend a RAID-1 logical volume on HP Proliant ML350p Gen8 server ?

Hi Experts,

Would anyone please give some guideline or doc link on how to expand a RAID-1 logical volume on HP Proliant ML350p Gen8 server ?

Presently we have 3 disks configured RAID-1 with two logical drive. C drive for OS(Windows server 2008R2) and D drive for database. Since we are using Oracle Bigfile tablespace feature, I can't keep data on multiple logical drive. I need to extend D drive while we add new harddisk.

Please suggest me with some solution.

Thanks in advance.

2 disks and a spare?

In order to extend a RAID1 you need 2 new disks.

Hope this helps!

Experts please correct me if I am off. ;)

Roy, you need to clone the old drives onto 2 new drives, and then expand the array afterwards. If you need to keep the server running during this process:

  1. Backup all of your data before proceeding!
  2. Remove one drive and replace it with a larger drive. Allow the system to rebuild the new mirrored drive. (The rebuild process can take a long time.)
  3. Verify that the original and new drive are working properly as a pair.
  4. Remove the other old drive and replace it with a larger drive. Allow the system to rebuild the new mirrored drive.
  5. You should now have 2 new mirrored drives, but the current capacity will be the same as the old drives.
  6. Use the HP ACU to expand the drives to their full capacity.
  7. Replace the spare and verify that it is set up properly as a spare. (Unassign the old spare, replace the drive, assign the new spare.)

Note that you will have to replace all 3 drives or your spare will be too small.
