How to upgrade AG815B HP DL380 G5 Base Storage Server to W2008 x64 ?
Hi,
We have
AG815B HP DL380 G5 Base Storage Server
with Microsoft Windows Storage Server 2003 R2 Standard x64 Edition operating system and we need to upgrade to Windows Storage Server 2008 Standard x64 ?
What and where is the right upgrade SW kit ?
Is there anything special in upgrade procedure?
We tried to install: NSS_X1000_X3000_G2_System_Recovery_vSWX_2.00.0a_DVD_5697_0647.iso the result : This version is not supported on ...
Then we tried to install older version: NSS_X000_X3000_System_Recovery_v1.6.0a_DVD_5697_0379.iso and the same result: This version is not supported on ....
Thanks
Stefan

Re: How to upgrade AG815B HP DL380 G5 Base Storage Server to W2008 x64 ?
Hi, if your storage server's product number is not listed for the recovery DVD it will not work.
https://h20392.www2.hp.com/portal/swdepot/searchProducts.do
There is only one with AG815B - with windows 2003.
Based on this I assume that there is no kit for Windows 2008 and that you would need to buy it separately.
Maybe it's possible to install that together with a smartstart CD.
However, I wonder if it is supported to install another OS like this on a storage server..

Re: How to upgrade AG815B HP DL380 G5 Base Storage Server to W2008 x64 ?
Hello Stefan,
for a complete new installation of Windows Storage Server 2008x64 R1 or R2 on DL380G5 Server you need a few things to know.
You can download only an installation image from HP because a Windows Storage Server is only sold with a new server.
HP offers an update, which you know. After you get the image, burn it to DVD.
Take greater disks than 36GB, start with Smartstart and create with ACU a Raid1 set and a logical drive of 70GB or greater.
Boot into Bios (F9) and change the Product ID of the server to an X1000G1 or X3000G1 System product number for Windows Storage Server 2008R1, and a G2 Modell for Windows Storage Server 2008R2, else you will never can install a Windows 2008 Storage Server. The installation routine checks the Product ID and offers the restore button or not.
Boot with DVD or over iLO with ISO File and install the new Storage Server. After the installation is finished change back Product ID. You need a Windows 2008 Storage Server Product Key to activate your installation. So you have to buy the Update from HP.

Re: How to upgrade AG815B HP DL380 G5 Base Storage Server to W2008 x64 ?
Hi Thomas,
Thanks for useful information.
I am going to use NSS_X000_X3000_System_Recovery_v1.6.0a_DVD_5697_0379.iso kit and Product ID X1000G1.Is it OK?
I supposed Windows Product key for all OS Storage server images is built-in in server.
Is the way how to obtain Windows 2008 Storage Server Product Key like temporary key to activate installation? The customer ordered TA725A,but I have to perform the installation asap according to other issues.

Re: How to upgrade AG815B HP DL380 G5 Base Storage Server to W2008 x64 ?
Hello Stefan,
you need the following Product ID for the installation BK778A. It's for a X1800 Storage Server.
The build in Microsoft Product ID is equal for each installation. So you need a separat key for Activation. Windows tells you that you have 3 days for Activation. TA725A is ok for Windows 2008 Storage Server. You need 72 or 146 GB HDDs for installation.

Re: How to upgrade AG815B HP DL380 G5 Base Storage Server to W2008 x64 ?
I have two DL380 G5 storage servers, AN983A and AG818A. If I orderTC337A and using the BIOS method above can I upgrade both of those to SS 2008 R2?
One already has 72gb boot drives and I will order 72gb drives for the other server as well.
Thanks
Jon
