HP DL180 GEN9 E5-2600 v4 120w upgrade
Hi there.
I wondered if anyone can shed some light on this for me..
I have a DL180 gen9 currently running 1x Xeon E-2620 v4 85W CPU. I think this was delivered in this spec from HP, although I cant be 100% sure.
I wish to upgrade to 2x E5-2680v4 120w CPU's.
Quickspec's lists the CPU as compatible but has this note.
NOTE: Processor upgrade from E5-2600v3 to E5-2600v4 is supported for processors up to 105W. Please refer to DL180 Gen9 User Guide for more details.
The user guide states,
Installing a E5-2600 v4 processor with a TDP higher than 105 W. If the server is currently using a E5-2600 v3 processor ("Identifying the processor type" on page 87) and you require an E5-2600 v4 processor with a TDP higher than 105 W, you will need to purchase a new server configuration specific to the E5-2600 v4 processor series. See the Hewlett Packard Enterprise website (http://www.hpe.com/info/servers) or contact an authorized Hewlett Packard Enterprise reseller for available server configurations in your region.
Does this mean that as the current server uses a E5-2620v4 I can upgrade to a 120W CPU but can't if the server was supplied with a v3 cpu to begin with?
What happens if I tried to upgrade from a v3 CPU to a 120W v4? the whole 'you will need to purchase a new server configuration specific to the E5-2600 v4 processor series' is a little mysterious
Has anyone done it? Does anyone know specifically what the deal is with both scenarios?
thank you.

Re: HP DL180 GEN9 E5-2600 v4 120w upgrade
Hi,
I have not tried this configuration by myself, but I found this info which might help.
There are two Systemboards for this server, one for V3 CPU and other for V3 & V4 CPU.

But its better to consult a HPE Reseller or Sales before you upgrade.
Thank You!

Re: HP DL180 GEN9 E5-2600 v4 120w upgrade
Hi Suman, thank you.
This makes partial sense in so far as, it seems from the user guide like one board will accept 'v3' and 'v4 up to 105w' and one board will accept any v4, which is not really how it looks on the parts list page.

Re: HP DL180 GEN9 E5-2600 v4 120w upgrade
Thank you.
I'm looking for a DIY solution, as this is a test bed server for me to learn on. (currently studying) by the time I talk to a reseller and buy a replacement motherboard, the cost is just not worth the effort.
There must be someone at HP that can give an informed answer as to how I get a 120w CPU in a dl180 gen 9. Quick specs list it, I just know it's not the full picture.
Thank you.

Hello,
This is not recommended as it might damage the system board.
Thanks.
