HP DL360 G5 CPU amber lights, after few minutes it starts up

Hi, I have a hp dl360 g5 server with dual "QUAD XEON E5440 2.83GHz 12MB", 32gb of ecc ddr2 ram.

Recently it has started to not power up directly, sometimes when you press the 'on' button, both cpu amber lights on the insight display come on, the server doesn't start, and then after 1-5 min out of nowhere, the insight lights go off and server starts to boot. From what I know, if the cpu's were bad, the system would never start.

Why would it do that?

One day I had to reboot the system quickly few times in a row, could anything happen while rebooting? One thing i noticed is that when the system was running, the heatsing right behind the two cpus, under a metal bracket for the pci card, was getting pretty hot, can it be the cause?

I need the server to be up and running reliably as quickly as possible, because of the raid I had on it with pretty valuable data.

P.S. The server does it on every single powerup, both cpu lights are on, and after few minutes they go off and server starts up, in ILO2 there is no data about cpu errors it in the error messages.

Hello,

As per the shared video, the servers are running very old BIOS (2004) and firmwareтАЩs set and the latest having several fixes.

As per shared video is showing the processor fault LED. Please follow the below link for more clarification.

Processor failure, socket X (amber)

Red

One or more of the following conditions may exist:

┬╖         Processor in socket X has failed.

┬╖         Processor X is not installed in the socket.

┬╖         Processor X is unsupported.

┬╖         ROM detects a failed processor during POST

I would suggest you update the server with the latest bios with the below sequence.

NOTE: You need 2-3 hour downtime for bios update after downloading. Each time you have to restart the server.

Please let me know, if the issue still persists after the bios update.

Re: HP DL360 G5 CPU amber lights, after few minutes it starts up

I got it working again.

All I have done is unplug both power supplies, clean the connectors, clean every stick of ram, and I left the server unplugged from power for the night. I also removed the bios clock battery, so the server had zero power.

Something in the server has reset itself, and now it boots without any error light or code. I don't really have time to upgrade bios on this machine, if I find enough space to safely backup everything from this server, then I'll upgrade the bios. It's running bios from 2011, and a backup ROM from 2004. The software is Lubuntu 16.04 because it is light and I had an install disk with it at hand when my friend and I were doing the setup back in January 2019. On Saturday I wanted to upgrade it to ubuntu 20.04 lts, with GUI, and that's when the problems started.

As I said, I reversed to the previous OS, cleaned the power supplies and ram, and left it with zero power for the night. That fixed it for me. Thanks for your quick answer. Also for the future, how you update the bios? From DVD, USB, HD, from bios or from OS? This is my first rack server with dual CPUs, so please understand that I have almost zero experience with this type of machine.

Re: HP DL360 G5 CPU amber lights, after few minutes it starts up

As per HP Proliant DL380 G5 Server - LEDs indication, if in Systems Insight Display LEDs lit Amber for processor it means Processor in socket X is in a pre-failure condition. However as suggested above you can check by updating BIOS firmware to latest.

Please refer below link for more information on HP Proliant DL380 G5 Server - LEDs indication.
