HP DL380 G8 Serial port configuration (with RHEL 6.4 OS)

Hi,

I'm trying to get the HP DL380 G8 server integrated with terminal server, and I'm having no success.

Would anyone have any hints what to do?

I've got RHEL 6.4 running on the DL380 and I'd like to be able to redirect the console of the OS to the HP serial port.

In BIOS I can see a number of settings for serial port, but I'm not sure which one I'm supposed to set and which COM port I should set.

Under "BIOS Serial Console & EMS" there are
1) "BIOS Serial Console Port"
2) "EMS Console"

Then under "System Options" there are
3) "Embedded Serial port"
4) "Virtual Serial Port"

Some of the above 4 settings have options to set COM1/COM2/COM3/AUTO/DISABLE, but I'm not sure which one to set and to which COM port.

After the BIOS settings, I've tried the following grub settings, but no luck so far, there's nothing displayed on my screen when I connect my laptop with null modem cable to the serial port at the back of the DL380.

/boot/grub/grub.conf

#splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz
serial --unit=0 --speed=115200 --word=8 --parity=no --stop=1
terminal --timeout=10 serial console

and added "console=tty0 console=ttyS0,115200" to the kernel line

Any ideas would be great!

Thanks!

THis document is for setting up with iLO3, but the same procedure works for iLO4

Thanks! But the VSP is through SSH/ILO right? What I need is to use the physical serial port.

Turned out that the issue was the cable. After purchasing a new cable the serial interface worked fine.
