HP Proliant Cd Rom Kit Install Problem

I am running an HP Proliant DL140 G2 Server. I have 2 blank hard drives installed, and would like to install linux suse as the main operating system. I bought the HP CD ROM kit for the DL140, hooked it up properly. It powers on and lights up, but for some reason the system is not detecting this drive. I have a feeling i might have to change something in the BIOS for the server to pick it up, but i'm not sure...again it is properly connected physically, except the server is not detecting the drive. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: HP Proliant Cd Rom Kit Install Problem

Hello,
I would think you have the CD ROM part # 349046-B21 as mentioned in http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/12205_na/12205_na.HTML#Options
Do you see the LED come up as u power ON the server ??

Regards.

Re: HP Proliant Cd Rom Kit Install Problem

So, you are trying to install SUSE, and the server is not booting from the install disc.

Check the BIOS settings for the boot device & make sure that CDROM is the first boot device. Boot without the install disc, you should see something like:

Attempting to boot from CDROM...

If this shows up successfully, the CDROM must be working fine & if the install media still doesn't boot, try another one.

Good Luck!

Re: HP Proliant Cd Rom Kit Install Problem

Alright, I changed the boot order to be CDROM, then Hard Disk. When i start the machine though, it doesn't say anything about even attempting to boot from CD-ROM. It's like it's just not detecting it altogether. Do you think theres something i have to change in the bios to make it detect the CD-ROM? Also, in the BIOS under where it says CD rom in the boot order menu, should it display the model# of the CD-ROM just like it does with the Hard Disk?

Thanks for your help guys!

Re: HP Proliant Cd Rom Kit Install Problem

Yes, I have seen BIOS displaying the model name for e.g. HL-DT-XX-XX.. (depending on the model & make). Haven't checked on this server though.

If it displays, BIOS detects the drive & there is no reason why the drive will not work later. So we will stick with the second scenario (BIOS doesn't detect). Which means we have to check the physical connectivity of the drive. Just to get a silly question out of the way, did you have any jumpers on the CD ROM drive (allowing you - master/slave/cable select)?

1. Is the cable connected the other way around?
2. Is it connected to the correct channel on the system board?
