Hello guys!
I'm getting confused while looking which "Spare part" I should look for, in case I wanna upgrade my server's memory, adding a further 8GB module.
As the thread title, I'm referring to an HP ProLiant DL380 G6 server ("Performance" series, I guess, considering the native 2 x Intel 5560 Xeon 2,80 GHz Quad processor and the 12GB DDR3 SDRAM), on which were further added 2 x 4GB 2RX4 PC3-10600R-9-KIT (500658-B21) RAM modules, for an overall of 20GBs.
According to the user manual, 2RX4 means "Dual Rank x4" and PC3-10600R means "PC3-10600 RDIMM, aka Registered DIMM", which differs from the "Unbuffered with ECC DIMMs (UDIMMs)" type.
Now, referring to the ProLiant DL380 "Quick Specs" guide (pag.20, Step 2: Choose Required Options), the designed 8GB "Registered" module that should be installed on this server is the "HP 8GB (1x8GB) Dual Rank x4 PC3-10600 (DDR3-1333) Registered CAS-9 Memory Kit" and its spare code is: 500662-B21.
However, searching for this code (500662-B21), I found out that is a 8GB 1X8 DR X4 PC3-10600E-9 KIT REG (for HP Proliant server) RAM modules. So, I'm wondering if 10600E means "ECC"; if so, could I put it together the 10600R modules already installed on my Server? And, is this code (500662-B21) the correct spare part I have to look for?
Or is the spare part 593913-B21 ("HP 8GB 2Rx4 PC3-10600R-9 Kit") the correct one I've to buy?
Hope someone could clarify that to me.. I'm really confused; can't figure out... >_<

Re: HP ProLiant DL380 G6 Server - Memory Upgrade
Hi
All HP memory dimms are ECC dimms , Im not sure where you found out this description " (500662-B21), I found out that is a 8GB 1X8 DR X4 PC3-10600E-9 KIT REG (for HP Proliant server)RAM modules "
To avoid confusion, I looked into partsurfer http://partsurfer.hp.com/Search.aspx?SearchText=500662-B21 it is an Registered dimm too, looks like from your thread server already has Rdimms and you can surely use 500662-B21 dimms on the server with the current dimms
8GB, PC3-10600R, DDR3-1333MHz RDIMM (Option 500662-B21)
And this is what You have on the server for : 500658-B21
http://partsurfer.hp.com/Search.aspx?searchText=500658-B21
4GB (256MBx4), 1333MHz, PC3-10600R, DDR3 DIMM memory module
Im positive you can mix both of these as both of them are registerred dimms

Re: HP ProLiant DL380 G6 Server - Memory Upgrade
Thank you Gautham for your reply.
So, I'll refer to the spare code 500662-B21 for my purchasing.
Last question. What do you mean in your sentence:

Do you think I could experience troubles adding one (or two) 8GB module(s) to the existing configuration?
Be aware that this server comes with 6 x 2GB modules (12GB native), to which we've already added 2 x 4GB modules. So, at this time, we've 8 modules installed (mixed 2 and 4GB).
Are there any guidelines/rules for the RAM modules pairing/installation, or I can freely add the further 8GB modules on any free RAM slot?
Thank you once again for your kind support; I look forward for any replies.

SolutionI do not think adding 8gb modules on existing configuration will pose any problems and yes their are specific rules for adding memory .
I would suggest you go through this memory configuration here ( look under memory subsection )

Re: HP ProLiant DL380 G6 Server - Memory Upgrade
Thank you Guatham, the Memory Configurator Tool was really helpful. Guess is the best way to get all the information needed (suggesting you the optimal ram configuration, together the spare-part codes).
For instance, in order to fully use my server's triple channel, the conf. tool suggested me to add 4 x 4GB modules, instead of 2 x 8GB modules (considering the already installed 2 x 4GB modules). So that I'll have 6 x 2GB + 6 x 4GB = 36GB. The spare part I'll look for - then - is: 500658-B21.
So, thank you and have a nice day!
Daniel

Re: HP ProLiant DL380 G6 Server - Memory Upgrade
I also have a DL380 G6 server with 2x X5650 Cpus populated. Server came with 16g b of ram ( 4x 4gb rdimms)
However i got hold of an extra 2x 8gb rdimms.
I was looking at the memory configuration link provided and i cant figure out how could i make it work regarding my system
Can 4x 4gb and 2x 8g coexist and work in my dl380 g6?
I understand if its not optimal or performance wise but can i use and achieve all total 32gbs i my server as thats the total of dimms I have?
or i need to buy another set of 2x 8gb rams and have 4x of 4gbs and 4x of 8gbs dimms?
Thanks a lot

Re: HP ProLiant DL380 G6 Server - Memory Upgrade
Hello @DerAdler
Goutham_Sabala gave incredibly informative information. I wanted to inform you that the 8GB, PC3-10600R, DDR3-1333MHz RDIMM (500662-B21) is available directly through the HP Small and Medium Business Store web site.
I hope this information was helpful, if you wanted to be connected to an HP Server Specialist please do not hesitate to let me know and I will be happy to connect you.
