Which controller are you dealing with?  If it is the 'B' series Dynamic Smart Array, it requires a closed source driver that is kernel specific., many users just run it in SATA mode.  If you are using a 'P' series Smart Array the OS should already have the porper driver.

Re: Instructions for install Centos 7 on DL120G9

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. It is a B140i with 4 sata drives. 2 x 1TB for OS, 2 x 4TB for data.

If you want to use the controller in RAID mode you will need the hpdsa driver image

https://support.hpe.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?sp4ts.oid=7304563&swItemId=MTX_090fe0d487ed4bd2b07234b37f&swEnvOid=4184

This link has the driver for RHEL 7.3 and 7.4  Please keep in mind when RHEL 7.5 is released you will need to wait for the driver to be released before you can update.  This controller is essentially software RAID as the driver controls the RAID functionality.. The RHEL drivers will work with CentOS

Another option is to put the controller in SATA AHCI mode and use HPE LSRRB (Linux Software Raid Redundant Boot). This uses the native software RAID included with Linux, but also sets up the mirror drive as a bootable drive.  More information can be found here: https://downloads.linux.hpe.com/SDR/project/lsrrb/

Re: Instructions for install Centos 7 on DL120G9

Hi Jimmy,

Thanks for the reply. I have been following the instructions here:

https://serverfault.com/questions/721523/install-centos-7-on-hp-dl120-gen9-server-with-b140i-raid-controller

and I get stuck at step 8.

In step 7 I can see I have selected the driver and I can see that the system reads the “dd” file.

It is there I don’t know what to do; “continue with installation as usual”

I have tried hitting c and it continues around a loop. I swapped to the USB back to original USB and hit r so the USB is seen and the c for continue.

When install comes up I am still presented with the individual sata drives to select install onto. I would expect to see two arrays (that I configure in the SSA B140i).

Re: Instructions for install Centos 7 on DL120G9

Hi,

I switched to the below, which has far greater success as swapping the bootable USB and the driver USB seems a problem.

https://community.hpe.com/t5/ProLiant-Servers-Netservers/How-to-install-Centos-7-0-with-RAID-1-on-Proliant-Microserver/m-p/6930176/highlight/false#M21237

But…..

Things went as described but I noticed an error just after hitting "c" to continue with install:

"modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'hpsa' : Invalid argument"

Previously "Extracting: kmod-hpsa" said to me it got the driver okay

I am doing Centos7 on HPE DL120G9 withth Smart Array B140i.

The driver I was using is:

https://support.hpe.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?sp4ts.oid=7304563&swItemId=MTX_090fe0d487ed4bd2b07234b37f&swEnvOid=4184

hpdsa-1.2.10-123.rhel7u3.x86_64.dd.gz

The line I added was: modprobe.blacklist=ahci inst.dd

I then did Cntl-x that allowed the installation to continue

Any ideas?
