It's time to assemble the server,
I have two raid 1 ssds, 6 raid 10 hdds.
2 hdd year 2013, 2 hdd year 2015, 2 hdd year 2016.
I would like to understand how best to pair them, and how the smart array card pairs them, in order to insert them in the right slots.
I attach a drawing for better understanding.
Thank you

Re: Rif.: matching hard drives by year for array
Hello,
The Year actually does not matter
as long as HPE has the Firmware available for those drives.
Please share the below to check Compatibility.
> Server Model
> Model of all the Drives
> Controller card Model
Thank you

Re: Rif.: matching hard drives by year for array
Maybe I didn't explain the question well, I'm writing from Italy, I use the translator.
How to place hdds in slots to write the same data to hdds not from the same lot.
Example:
2016+2013
2013+2015
2015+2016
all disks are compatible with the server, the other information is written in drawing n.2
you can uncheck "solved"
thank you

Re: Rif.: matching hard drives by year for array
Hello,
are you referring to RAID 1(Mirroring)?
It is recommended to Use :
1. Same type of drives in RAID ( e.g. SAS+SAS , SATA+SATA)
2. Add the same capacity drives to the RAID.
Regards.

Re: Rif.: matching hard drives by year for array
hi, i know how to raid, it's not the first time.
i have P440ar Controller, and two 4 port backplane, i can use 8 hdd each backplane is connected to a different controller
output.
port n.1 is connected to server slots 1-2-3-4
port n.2 is connected to server slots 5-6-7-8
2 x sas raid 1 ssd for proxmox and virtual machines.
6 x hdd sas raid 10 data
i want to understand how the controller pairs slots 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8 for arrays.
example:
for raid 1 (2 ssds) is it better to insert them in slots 1-2 (all on port n.1 of the controller)
or 1-5? (one on each controller port)
for raid 10, are they paired in succession, or alternate?
example:
1+2 ; 3+4 ; 5+6 ; 7+8
or 1+3 ; 2+4 ; 5+7 ; 6+8
or 1+5 ; 2+6 ; 3+7 ; 4+8
I need to understand this, I hope it is clear
thank you

Re: Rif.: matching hard drives by year for array
Hello,
When you add the drives in the server the SSA (HPE Smart Storage Administrator )will detect all the drives.
It is recommended to use identical type of drives when creating an array.
You get the option to select the drive when creating an array so for example if you have 8 HDD connected to one controller then you can create Raid 1 using any of the two drive detected under this controller.
Similarly you can choose which ever drive you want to select for a different set of array.
The drive slot does not matter because creating the array itself allows you to choose available drives from different slots.
And it also does not matter which year the drive was manufactured as long as the specs are the same which is required for drives in the same array.
Hope this clears your query
Thank you

Re: Rif.: matching hard drives by year for array
I thank you for the answer,
two ssds of the same model, same lots
six hdds of the same model, three different lots
raid 1 is not a problem, I choose the two ssds and create arrays.
I choose the six hdds, and tell the controller to create raid 10.
The controller will pair them, I don't think I can decide how to pair them.
I want the data to be replicated across drives built in different years.
If for any reason 2 hdds from 2015 break at the same time, they must not contain the same data, I would lose everything.
Maybe I'm being too paranoid, but I've always heard that it's best to pair raids with drives from different lots, and I have 6
drives from 3 different lots. Thanks for the attention
