upgrade HP PROLIANT DL580 G2 SERVER from 32 to 64

Hi,

I got a HP PROLIANT DL580 G2 SERVER, it has
* 4 x 1.9 GHZ XEON CPU'S (32 bit). Now I like to upgrade to 64 bit and install CentOS 64, but not sure if it is possible to do so. Can anybody who has experience help pls?

Best Regards!

Bill

I vote for "not possible". These are 32 bit CPUs.

And CENT OS is not an officially from HP supported OS.

Re: upgrade HP PROLIANT DL580 G2 SERVER from 32 to 64

Hi, Mit60,

thank you for the reply. Sorry, I did not make myself clear.

My question should be:

is it possible to upgrade DL580 G2 from 32 to 64?

centOS is the OS I use at the moment, but I can use whatever OS HP support no problem.

The xeon 1.9 GZ is the 32, that is why I ask if it is possible to replace this chip with 64 equivalanet.

Sorry for the confusion.

Cheers!

Ahaaa, I see now. Sorry for not clearly understanding your question.

Please, take a look here:
http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/11372_na/11372_na.HTML

Intel Xeon Processor MP at 3.0 GHz\4MB
Intel Xeon Processor MP at 2.7 GHz\2MB
Intel Xeon Processor MP at 2.2 GHz\2MB
Intel Xeon Processor MP at 2.8 GHz\2MB
Intel Xeon Processor MP at 2.5 GHz\1MB
Intel Xeon Processor MP at 2.0 GHz\

All of them are 32bit. Unfortunately 64bit are not supported on this server.
For example G4 and G5 support 64bit, but they're newer. I am really sorry :(

Re: upgrade HP PROLIANT DL580 G2 SERVER from 32 to 64

No, DL580 G2 uses Intel Xeon Processor MP processors (with 400 MHz FSB, 512K L2 and L3), those were done with 130 nm technology and before Intel decided to follow AMD and include x86-64 instructions.
Check Intel specs here:

Check supported OS for this server here:

Re: upgrade HP PROLIANT DL580 G2 SERVER from 32 to 64

thanks Mi6t0/ vcespon,

I checked the page vcespon gave, it looks like it supports RH EL5 AMD64/EM64T. Does it mean if I buy a AMD64/EM64T and replace Intel xoen 1.9GZ, it will work? The chip socket is 607 or 603 I think.

Cheers!

Re: upgrade HP PROLIANT DL580 G2 SERVER from 32 to 64

Where did you see that?
This is the Linux certification table for Proliant servers:
http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/servers/linux/hpLinuxcert-archive.html

Only 32 bits versions are supported on DL580 G2.
