Upgrading Power Supply for HP ProLiant DL180 Gen9 with Enhanced Configuration

Hello HP Community,

I currently own an HP ProLiant DL180 Gen9 server, which originally came with a single 550W power supply without redundancy. My server setup includes 8 SATA 3.5" HDDs, 8 RAM modules, and an Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2609 v3 @ 1.90GHz processor.

I am planning to upgrade the processor to an Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2699 v3 @ 2.30GHz. Given the additional power requirements of the new processor along with the existing components, I am concerned whether the current 550W power supply will suffice.

Could you please advise on a more powerful and compatible power supply option for my server? Additionally, I am interested in adding redundancy to the power supply. What models would you recommend for this purpose?

Thank you for your assistance.

Re: Upgrading Power Supply for HP ProLiant DL180 Gen9 with Enhanced Configuration

Hi,

Please refer to the server QuickSpecs first to check if the configuration is possible.
Page# 4 & 21 states that  E5-2695v is supported.

User Guide on page# 74 Installing a E5-2600 v4 processor with a TDP higher than 105 W

Thank You!

Re: Upgrading Power Supply for HP ProLiant DL180 Gen9 with Enhanced Configuration

Do you mean to tell me that the Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2699 v3 @ 2.30GHz processor will not be compatible with the server?...

Because according to me, it is from the same generation, same socket, it came out together with the processor that originally came with the server.

And I want to know if I can change my non-redundant 550w source to a redundant 900w one.

Re: Upgrading Power Supply for HP ProLiant DL180 Gen9 with Enhanced Configuration

Hi @RicRey
Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2699 v3 @ 2.30GHz processor should not support DL180 Gen9 server. But I assume, the processor might to replaced from some other server such as DL380 Gen9 which supports E5-2699 processor. Please verify once again the installed processor model.

The 990W power supply is supported as redundunt PS. But it has two models (744689-B21 and 775595-B21). Please chose appropriate as per the your server. Refer the document HPE ProLiant DL180 Gen9 Server Maintenance and Service Guide. Page No.84.

Re: Upgrading Power Supply for HP ProLiant DL180 Gen9 with Enhanced Configuration

Greetings!

Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2699 v3 @ 2.30GHz processor is not supported for DL180 Gen9 server. Below web-links for reference.

Also 550W PSU is a non-hotplug and non-redundant power supply.

If you are looking to change the configuration to redundant power supplies. Redundant Power Supply Kit would be required.

Please refer "HPE ProLiant Gen9 Essential Server Power Supplies - Redundant" on the server quickspecs.
