ProLiant 3000 adding RAM

I am wanting to add RAM. I have two identical servers, took the 4 DIMMS out of one, added it to the other. Would not re-boot. Would not do anything. I am running Netware 5.0 sp6a. Is there a utility that needs to be run for the server to recognize the new RAM? Pls advise. Would like to utilize my resources to beef up one server, as the other one is not needed.

Nancy:

There are different versions of the ProLiant 3000. What speed of processor is installed in the server you are attempting to upgrade?

Take a look at this PDF:

Page 29 shows the install order to insert the RAM.

Re: ProLiant 3000 adding RAM

John, Thanks so much for your response. I think I have inherited a 512, but am not sure. Invoice is dated 6/1/98. Both servers came at the same time, listed PL3000 6300 512 64 US on invoice with the Optional 64 MB EDO DIMM Mem Kit 2x32MB also listed on the invoice. Both servers had 4 DIMMS, so I am assuming that I now have 8 32 MB EDO DIMMS. Looking at the manual that you sent me the link to, I had all 8 slots filled up as one of the options listed in the configuration. It would not come on when I replaced the cover. I was hoping for some information on whether or not there is a configuration utility that you go into. Is there a next step after the physical addition of the DIMMS? Thanks again. Nancy.

Re: ProLiant 3000 adding RAM

Nancy:

Did the 3000 you removed the RAM from come off of a Memory Board or from the Mainboard as shown in the PDF I sent you?

Like I said in the first post, there are versions of the 3000 that are "not alike".

Re: ProLiant 3000 adding RAM

The 4 that I robbed from the out of service server came off a board that is mounted on the main board. Installed exactly like the server that I am trying to add them to. Two of the DIMMS in BOTH servers are one sided RAM, two are two sided RAM. So, I have in both servers slots 1 & 2 the single-sided RAM, then in slots 3 & 4 the two sided RAM. My server does not look exactly like the picture on page 2-28, as I have 8 slots all together. I'll look again and see if I have four slots anywhere on the main board. I don't think I do. Mine are gold part installed up, and are horizontal facing the side of the unit. I could take a digital picture and e-mail it if that would be beneficial to your helping me with this issue. I truly appreciate your time. Thanks, Nancy

Re: ProLiant 3000 adding RAM

Ok... Here is what i would like you to do...
Install 4 x 32MB DIMMs on the mainboard and 4 x 32MB DIMMs on the Memory Board.
Take a look at this PDF, it will show the memory board with the Bank Layout. It also shows four DIMM slots behind the processor.
http://h200005.www2.hp.com/bc/docs/support/UCR/SupportManual/TPM_296908-002/TPM_296908-002.pdf
Page 71 has the diagram.

Install 4 DIMMs in Banks 1 & 2 on the main board
Install 4 DIMMs in Banks 3 & 4 on the Memory Board.

Let me know if this works for you.

Re: ProLiant 3000 adding RAM

John, after trying every configuration possible, it finally worked. Leaving the four original in the memory board, and adding the four extra to the main board with alternating single-sided and double-sided. It did automatically recognize the RAM at start-up and everything is great. Thanks so much!! Nancy

Re: ProLiant 3000 adding RAM

Glad I could help. You should print out that manual for future reference. Now you know which server you have. Like I said, there a a few flavors of PL3000.
