proliant 3000 drive cage

i have bought(2nd user) a proliant 3000 to act as fileserver and eventually webserver but have noticed that file copy over the network is extremely slow, 500mb took 20mins to transfer over 100mbs network. the server has a simplex cage connected to the onboard controller. Could the simplex cage be the cause of such slow transfers or am i looking in the wrong place?
