Proliant 6400R - Faulty hot-plug fan

Hi,

Is there anyway to override the system from shutting down when a fan isn't present and/or operating at the required speed? I've replaced the hot-plug fan with a standard PC case fan (yes I know its shotty, but i'm not going to spend $230 on a replacement fan) that runs at over 3600rpm (that's what the old one ran at), the server still complains about the fan though, and continues to reboot itself. Can I override the system so that it will boot?

cheers,
Stephen

Re: Proliant 6400R - Faulty hot-plug fan

I Was able to enter the system bios and disable thermal shutdown. This is not the best solution, but in my case as well, all the fans are running and there is plenty of air flow. Even the bios says that the assembly will provide adequate cooling. My bios gives me error:

1611-CPU zone fan assembly failure. FAn #1 has failed. Fan solution not fully redundant.

When the server boots and the HP Agents start, it rebooted the server. I disabled the thermal shutdown option in the bios and it no longer reboots. I'm going to have to contact HP Support on this one. If I replace the fan, it sounds like from other forum posters that the problem will still be there.

You can disable the HP Shutdown Service on a temporary basis. This will stop the server from restarting.

Hi Joe - how have been able to bypass the environmental shutodwn? We're desperately trying to get a server running again (we did replace the fans with standard PC fans, but the server insists on slower fans). No if we could only bypass the environmental shutdown to enter the bios and disbale thermal shutdown, we would be done. Please tell me how you did it?

Re: Proliant 6400R - Faulty hot-plug fan

If you hit F8 to enter the system bios, look around in the options for thermal shutdown. You can disable it to avoid the server shutting itself off and rebooting. FYI - I called HP support and they sent me a replacement CPU Zone Fan assembly. This fixed the issue and all the fans are working again. Good luck!
