SA5304 migration, expansion RAID 1+0 to ADG

setup: DL380G2, SA5304, Win2K Pro, 2x18GB RAID 1+0, stripe 16KB

target: 6x73GB ADG

Waiting for replacement battery for the 5304 to arrive before I proceed but would like to confirm the procedure.

So, is this right:

1. remove 18GB #0
2. replace with 73GB and wait for rebuild
3. remove 18GB #1
4. replace with 73GB and wait for rebuild
5. insert 73GB #2-5 and migrate to ADG

Will this also expand the array to the new size ?

I replied to a forum recently on this and someone else said you can increase the size of the physical disks. I don't know about migrating to ADG though.

I don't recommend using ADG. I had it on one of my servers and the performance overhead only really became apparent when I rebuild it without the ADG. I'd suggest you're better off using an "offline or hot" spare drive. You don't have the performance overhead then (it was fairly significant).

As for ADG: I need redundancy over performance. Perhaps it's HP's implementation of ADG that's the issue. I plan on also trying an Adaptec 2230SLP with RAID6 and see how that goes.

Yes, I know the odds of a second failure during a RAID5 rebuild are low but considering a rebuild can take days I cannot take that chance.
