RMC-V 6.0 - HPE Array snapshot creation failed: No VMs found on remote copy group to protect

Hi all,

we installed RMC-V 6.0 and it worked for some weeks without a problem. Setup: 2x 3PAR StoreServe with Remote Copy (sync). RMC-V creates Snapshost for RC Groups on the primary and secondary array. One RMC-V appliance is configured to handle both arrays. vCenter is v6.7.

Now for some reason the snapshot creation fails for some RC Groups while snapshots for other RC Groups are still working.

But of course there are VMs on the RC Group volumes. Restart of the RMC-appliance didnt help.

Any ideas?

Hi Joerg,

this is the validation RMC-V does. can you please check one more time the Datastore (carved from RC group) is having VMS.

it might be possible that the VMS might have moved or vmotioned.

Hi Amar,

we could fix the problem by reducing the number of parallel RMC snapshot operations. Maybe the vCenter didn't answer in time, so the RMC timed out.

Unfortunately, the RMC creates VM-Snapshot twice for each RC-Volume: First VM-Snapshot for the primary 3PAR-Volume and then for the secondary 3PAR-Volume. Why not create the 3PAR-Snapshots on BOTH arrays, when VM-Snapshots have been created? This doubles the processing time.

Hi Joerg,

can you please confirm the RC group is configured with Periodic/Sync. if periodic the behavior is expected.

1.create a snapshot on primary array.

2. sync the data on to secondary array.

3. create snapshot on secondary array.

The RC groups are configured in a synchronuous replication.

if RC group is configured as Synchronous, Array triggers coordinated snapshot at a time. which should be almost same time on both the arrays.

Hi Amar,

this is the way the old RMC-V-Verion v4.10 worked.

After migration to 6.0 we have two separate snapshots (including VM-snapshots for each).

We are using a Copy-Policy containing a snapshot and a remote snapshot because this was the only way to create a snapshot on both arrays. Using policy with a snapshot only will only create a snapshot on the primary array.

This is expected as you have configured to have a local snapshot and remote snapshot policy for same object.
