Email Alerts with Insight Manager

Re: Email Alerts with Insight Manager

you can get very refined in the event handling email notification. Start by creating a task to email you for all Critical, Major and Minor Events for all systems.

As for the Nic, Maybe it only sends a trap when the link goes down ? Try connecting the NIC to make a good link and then disconnect it and see if it sends a trap to the SIM and then see if SIM send you a email notification

Also please assign points to the answers that have helped.

Re: Email Alerts with Insight Manager

I tried setting up a new task. Below are the settings.

Events:
Event category is Proliant NIC Events
Event category is Proliant NIC Events and subcategory is Ethernet team lost redundancy
Event category is Proliant NIC Events and subcategory is Ethernet team redundancy increased
Event category is Proliant NIC Events and subcategory is Network connectivity restored
Event category is Proliant NIC Events and subcategory is Network interface lost connectivity
severity is Critical
severity is Major
severity is Minor

System collection: All Systems
All Systems

I re-enabled, then disabled the NIC and for some reason I'm still not getting anything. I see that it's in alarm, but for some reason no email is sent. I'll fiddle with it, but can you see any reason why these wouldn't send?

Thanks,
Scott

Re: Email Alerts with Insight Manager

Are you getting any email notifications ?
if not, did you try a test email from the Events>Automatic Event Handling>Email Settings Page ? to make sure your email settings are correct and working.

Re: Email Alerts with Insight Manager

I did set up a sign in/out alert and I'm receiving those when I log in or out of the SIM server. For some reason I can't get anything for the ESX alerts.

Re: Email Alerts with Insight Manager

Try the test trap inside the system management home page https://youresxserver:2381 first to be sure that your esx is able to sen a trap. Don't forget to read the footnote on the SMH -> Setting ->snmp setting page.

Re: Email Alerts with Insight Manager

Thanks bpe.
I tried sending a trap, but I'm still not getting an email. I read the notice at the bottom of the SMH page and I believe I have everything set up correctly. I'm getting the emails if a virtual machine on that server goes down, but nothing for monitoring the hardware. Do you know what I could be missing?

Thanks,
Scott

Re: Email Alerts with Insight Manager

Hi Scott

Did you check the ESX firewall and the SIM Server firewall?

Re: Email Alerts with Insight Manager

Hi Scott
Check also the /etc/sudoers file if you do not get the test trap from the esx SMH to the SIM server. If you have ESX 4.0 check for a
line

Defaults requiretty

Add the following line below

Defaults:hpsmh !requiretty

and your test trap should work

I guess you have ESX not ESXi is this correct?

Re: Email Alerts with Insight Manager

Do you know what ports need to be open from the ESX host?
I added the line - Defaults:hpsmh !requiretty - to the sudoers.esx4 file (the sudoers file did not have defaults requiretty). I tried to send a trap, but still nothing. Below is a copy of my sudoers.esx4 file. And yes, I am running esx4. Thanks.

Re: Email Alerts with Insight Manager

Check your /etc/sudoers for the following lines at the end of the file. Otherwise run /sbin/hpsnmpconfig

# The following entries were added by hp-smh-templates at
# Sun Apr 25 19:17:57 CEST 2010
# WARNING! Any changes between here and the END marker are managed by hp-health
# and maybe automatically removed.
%hpsmh ALL=NOPASSWD:/etc/init.d/snmpd
%hpsmh ALL=NOPASSWD:/usr/bin/snmptrap
# ---------------------- END --------------------
