How to configure the "Server role" variable in Linux
"Server Role — Displays the description of the system’s role or function. You can also set the Server Role text on
multiple devices by creating a Group Configuration Task in HP Systems Insight Manager. To learn more about
how to set the server role refer to the HP Systems Insight Manager Technical Reference Guide."
So I turned to the sysbook.pdf (a.k.a. HP Systems Insight Manager Technical Reference Guide) on hp.com and it in turn states
"Server Role Criterion
The Server Role criterion is a system or event collection search that enables you to list the servers
of one or more matching roles. The server role is a user-specified value available on HP Insight
Management Agent 5.4 or later."
and
"Server Role. This is a user settable server role from the ProLiant agents and can be set
from the System Management Homepage.
Comments. This is user settable comments from the SNMP or other agents."
But nothing on how this is done in Linux, and since the Linux agent is text bases instead of GUI based as in Windows, is there anyone who could tell me how to configure the Linux settings, what to enter and where ?

Re: How to configure the "Server role" variable in Linux
I have actually managed to configure the Linux agents. While not possible from within the agent itself the settings that are being used can be saved and used by SIM.
All you need to do is put the "Server Role" in the cpqhosystemrole.dat file and restart cmahostd.
Example:
$ echo "My Linux Web Server" >>/var/spool/compaq/hpasm/registry/cpqhosystemrole.dat
$ /opt/compaq/foundation/etc/cmahostd restart

Re: How to configure the "Server role" variable in Linux
I'm trying to achieve exactly this on Redhat clients, though very limited (none except for this thread) information about it. :(
after the two steps:
- /var/spool/compaq/hpasm/registry/cpqhosystemrole.dat
- $ /opt/hp/hp-snmp-agents/server/etc/cmahostd restart
where can I find the value in SIM for the specific client?
Best regards / MG

Re: How to configure the "Server role" variable in Linux
Our current Linux requirements have changed due to the nature of this "fix" being so undocumented and hard to get any real info on so we no longer rely on it, so I'm sorry I can't get you any more details on Linux.

Re: How to configure the "Server role" variable in Linux
I can't understand why a function like that wouldn't be available for Linux hosts. The next step is to change available subtypes in the database... :P
Cheers!
