5 reasons ICT upgraded to HP Integrity

So you say you’re faced with mountains of data that requires processing quickly. If yes, how do you know what the best choice is  when the time comes to upgrade or refresh servers, storage, and software?  


If you want to be sure your infrastructure meets AND exceeds your needs, you may want to take a test drive by arranging a Proof of Concept.  That’s what the Italian researcher, Istituto G. Corporale (ICT), did.  ICT is a public health institution providing scientific and technical support to national and regional Italian governments in the areas of animal health and welfare, veterinary public health, and food safety.


ICT had a big problem.   They wanted to process many terabytes of data quickly and provide reports with the business intelligence required for better identifying the presence, spread, and control of diseases. The monthly computational time to perform statistical reporting was taking in excess of 12 hours, preventing ICT from carrying out other research.


For years ICT ran its complex research studies on HP AlphaServer Systems with an Oracle database and Oracle data processing infrastructure. As the studies grew in size and number, ICT reached a critical decision point: whether to upgrade within the HP server family or move to an all-Oracle stack by way of the Oracle Exadata Database Machine.


To be confident the upgrade solution, based on HP Integrity technology, would not only address their requirements but also provide the flexibility to adapt to future business opportunities, ICT decided on a Proof of Concept (POC).  


The POC took ICT’s most intense study, which required highly complex computations on 84 million records each month—more than one billion records per year—and ran it on an HP Mission-Critical Converged Infrastructure. They set up the Oracle database to run on an HP Integrity Superdome 2 and a new reporting application (which replaced Oracle Publisher) on HP Integrity BL860c i2 server blades. The data repository was housed on an HP EVA 6400 array and networked with an HP 8/80 SAN switch.


See for yourself the results this POC demonstrated:


  1. Accelerated processing of complex data computations that reduced time required from 12 hours to one hour, providing faster reporting of animal disease studies to Ministry of Health which enabled scientists to produce research reports approximately 40% faster and gain valuable insights for controlling and preventing the spread of disease
  2. Simplified administration, saving 10 man-hours per month that are now redirected to more strategic projects to enhance public health services
  3. Reduced the amount of storage space required for aggregated research results from 46MB to .5MB, providing room for expanded studies
  4. Lowered licensing costs by eliminating Oracle from the central processing and reporting areas of the infrastructure
  5. Assured compliance with research reporting deadlines to Ministry of Health, avoiding costly fines and enhancing the reputation of the Institute

Needless to say, the value of HP Integrity technologies, a key foundation to HP Mission-Critical Converged Infrastructure, was clearly demonstrated in the POC and made ICT's upgrade decision really easy.
