HPE announces Reference Architecture: SQL Server 2019 Standard Edition with HPE Persistent Memory

Learn how Hewlett Packard Enterpriseโ€™s new solution combining Microsoft SQL Server 2019 Standard Edition, the HPE ProLiant DL380 and HPE Persistent Memory provides multi-fold performance increase compared to Microsoft 2014 or older editions.

RA for SQL Server_blog_GettyImages-685774106.jpgBig Data is clearly a disruptive technology. Every industry is feeling the impact, from harnessing fleet data in real time to Artificial Intelligence impacting sales teams to how data access impacts rural America. Todayโ€™s hyper-connected digital age requires the speed of data access for more informed decisions that lead to better business outcomes. Businesses need solutions designed and built around the processes and applications that are at the core. The key is integrating a data ecosystem that allows you to generate new insights, yet allowing fast access to what you already know.

HPE collaborated with Microsoft to devise and support a database solution involving innovative hardware and software technologies to deliver a high-performance, low-cost database solution that allows you to harness your data. The solution combines the worldโ€™s most secure industry standard server, the HPE ProLiant DL380 and HPE Persistent Memory with Microsoftโ€™s SQL Server 2019 Standard Edition. With speeds closer to the memory and the non-volatility of storage, HPE Persistent Memory, available in 128, 256, and 512 GB capacities and featuring Intelยฎ Optaneโ„ข DC Persistent Memory, can transform critical database analytics workload. As with byte-addressable storage media, persistent memory unlocks new levels of performance using Microsoft SQL Server 2019 to bring in new features and enhancements with native support for persistent memory.

Key highlights of the solution include:

  • Gain up to a 16.5x improvement in decision support system (DSS) performance when upgrading from SQL Server 2014 Standard Edition running on an HPE ProLiant Gen8 Server to SQL Server 2019 Standard Edition running on an HPE ProLiant Gen10 Server with HPE Persistent Memory.
  • Realize a performance improvement up to 3.6x with HPE Persistent Memory over current generation NVMe technology with SQL Server 2019 Standard Edition deployments.
  • Achieve significant savings through reduced power and cooling requirements when upgrading from traditional low latency storage options to HPE Persistent Memory.

The database solution with HPE Persistent Memory accelerates IT performance by allowing customers to either place an entire database, or parts of a database, in persistent memory. The SQL Server Standard Edition limits the amount of memory used by the application. This limit does not apply to HPE Persistent memory. Therefore, one can reap all the benefits of a larger hybrid memory pool without the high cost of DDR, or hitting the application memory boundary limit. As a result, multi-fold performance gains are observed with a very cost effective solution.

HPE Persistent Memory Enables Data to be Stored, Moved, and Processed at Unprecedented Speed, Improving TCO.

HPE Persistent Memory, available in 128, 256, and 512 GB modules, features Intelยฎ OptaneTM DC Persistent Memory to approach the speed of traditional DRAM with the persistence of storage, ensuring high capacity, high performance, and ongoing data safety โ€” even in the event of an interruption in power due to an unexpected power loss, system crash, or normal system shutdown. HPE Persistent Memory modules are optimized for second-generation Intelยฎ XeonTM Scalable processors.

Microsoft SQL Server 2019 Standard Edition Continues to Evolve with the Modern Data Center

SQL Server 2019 continues the evolution of SQL Server, bringing new capabilities to the modern data ecosystem to better support and enhance data management and data-driven applications.

Enhancements in SQL Server 2019 fall into five main themes:

  • Reason over data anywhere, including better integration with big data systems, and new connectors for data virtualization.
  • Choice of language and platform, including more container scenarios, more supported platforms, and greater extensibility.
  • Industry leading performance and security, including better performance, extensions to intelligent query processing, and additional features to support GDPR compliance.
  • The only commercial database with AI built in, built-in machine learning is now supported in more scenarios, including machine learning in SQL Server on Linux, and support for machine learning in failover cluster instances.
  • Enhancing SQL Server on Linux, bringing SQL Server on Linux closer to feature-parity with SQL Server on Windows, including support for transactional replication and distributed transactions.
