NAS 1000S Reborn

Is it worth resurrecting a 1000S? I need some backup storage at home and thought it might be worth buying an old NAS, then replacing the fans and hard drives. Is the power supply proprietary, or can I replace it too? What would a 1000S be worth? Can I put 4 1TB drives in a 1000S? My performance needs are pretty basic, as are my backup requirements. What about the stock OS (Win2003 SP2), would it be better to go with something else? (FreeNAS?) Does the dual NIC imply that I can set it up to be accessible from 2 network segments? Sorry for all the n00b questions, I know I need to learn a lot more...
