I have a problem since i purchased above mentioned device. every time when i backup files on the tape using NTBackup i am getting less than 50 GB on 1 tape and not the whole 72 GB. i have upgraded the firmware also but the capacity problem is still there. USB device is connected to USB 2.0 Port. the tape device is connected to Windows server 2003 SP1 machine.

Hi Atiyan,

The dat72 drive and dat72 tape native capacity is 36GB. This means that on the tape when it gets full, you have 36GB of COMPRESSED data. Now how much UNCOMPRESSED data is this? It depends on your data, it looks like you data does not compress much that's why you get about 40GB.

The DAT72 states 72GB capacity assuming a 2:1 compression ratio. That means if the data compresses 2:1 you could fit 72GB of data compressed to 36GB in a dat72 tape.

Hi,

As already mentioned, the amount of data that that you will fit on the tape, will depend on how compressed it already is...

If your files are already compressed, zip files for example, it's not possible to compress them further, in fact they may end taking more space on the tape than they do on disk...

Hi Ariyan,

I would suggest you to nget hold of an LTO drive.

LTO drive has much higher capacity and much better performance. Something like an LTO-2 Ultrium 448 would probably be adequate (200GB native capacity

If you need more capacity, buy a bigger tape drive !

You could go with the DAT 160 range, although personally I'd go with an LTO based drive rather than DAT...
