C6375A DLT, and cable

I have a C6375A DLT tape drive, which normally is in a rack enclosure. The connector is mated to the rack and just slides in.

Anyway - the rack is at our corporate site and I have this tape drive at a distaster recovery location where I have another HP9000 server - but no rack enclosure.

This DLT is going to be our offsite spare, for an identical DLT back at corporate but I would like to be able to use it here at the DR site for occasional DR tape restore drills.

Is there a direct cable that I can use, or do I need a second rack enclosure?

You don't need a rack enclosure to just have the drive sit there. You need a scsi card in the system. lvd I believe.

The connector on the tape drive seems different, certainly doesn't match any SCSI cables that I have. Rather than having two rows of pins, it looks more like an edge connector, and has two short round plastic posts on either side. This mates to the enclosure but I don't have a cable here that meets it.

Perhaps one of those would work for you. Otherwise, I think you would have to obtain one of the standalone cases that the drive slips into. That would connect the drive to the case's internal connector, then you connect your SCSI cable to the case's external connector.

Yep, you need the enclosure. It might be easier / cheaper to simply purchase a separate external drive.

Consider what would happen if the primary site burned to the ground. You might not have the drive to cart around with you.

Thanks all. Well this is disappointing :) I already own two of the C6375A's and was hoping to leave one up here at the DR site. Only this morning I realized that the connector on it was for the enclosure back at corporate.

I looked at that link to the stand-alone drive. But, since I already have two drives I guess another enclosure wouldn't hurt.

I think I know what kind of enclosure you have.

The tape drive has just another connector at the rear as a standalone drive has. This is hotplug.

You may consider to just swap this connector or (for do it yourself guys) get the adapter out of the enclosure and put it on the drive between connector and cable. Not nice, but working.

Yes, I discovered that one day while trying to get an older tape drive to work on the server in the same SCSI interface.

That occurred to me. I am only using one bay of the two, in that enclosure, and there is a connector there - just an adapter really. Might try that.

The enclosure part number is C4318A or C4318B.

I personally would just buy another enclosure as there very cheap now, but another option is for you to remove the drive from the case, top just slides off the C6375A and you will have access to the std 68pin scsi connector. The power cable might be long enough inside the case to power it too, so you could still use a std power cord rather than rigging up a seperate psu.

if you removed the drive you could use your std 68pin cable
