Cleaning tape is rejected

I've got a HP DAT72 USB tape drive & the clean light is on, but when I insert the cleaning tape (HP DDS C5709A) it spits it right out again instead of cleaning the drive.

If the tape is ejected immediately then you need a new tape. They have a finite life.
