Compaq 40/80 GB DLT -

Had a tape stuck in unit. Got tape cartridge out - but tape was still in device. The lead had come off. Took off tape - was able to reposition the piece to pick up tape from another cartridge - but it did the same thing - lead came off and another tape is stuck inside. All lights keep flashing - I can get the cartridge out - but how to I stop if from pulling the leads off the tapes?
