EH957A - Ultrium LTO5 drive - cannot see it in Windows server

This is brand new install.

Windows Server 2008 Std

Tape drive is connected to Adaptec 3405

When I go to Adaptec configuration - I can see the drive is listed there

When I start Windows Server, the tape drive is not listed in Device Manager ( and of course Symantec Backup Exec cannot find it either )

I downloaded and installed latest drivers for tape drive

Windows is patched.

any ideas would be appreciated

Is that 3405 a supported adapter card?

Are you using the correct cable?   Have you swapped cables to see if it is faulty?

Can HP's Library and Tape Tools see the drive?  Download from http://www.hp.com/support/tapetools

I can see the card in Device Manager in Windows

Would the Adaptec recognize the tape drive if the cable was faulty?

Thank you for the link, I will run it tomorrow

The Adaptec 3405 is a RAID card.  Most RAID cards don't support tape drives.

HP's own SmartArray controllers have to have additional code added to work

correctly when tape drives are attached; I suspect that the Adaptec 3405 does

not have that code, and therefore won't work.

I bet you could plug this in to a 'dumb' SAS card and have it work with no problem.

The HP SC44Ge (416096-B21) or P212 SmartArray controller are listed in the

QuickSpec as supported controllers.

No Adaptec SAS controllers are supported with HP SAS tape drives at this time.

All of the HP SAS controllers work fine or if you need to use the drive on some non-HP platform that doesn't support one of the HP controllers the ATTO and LSI SAS controllers work.
