Re: Hardware compression does not work on Ultrium 3-SCSI tape drive.

Hardware compression does not work on Ultrium 3-SCSI tape drive.

I have HP 1/8 G2 Autoloader with Ultrium 3 tape drive.

Recently hardware compression quit working for weekly full backups. In the same time daily differential backups, much smaller in size, compressed just fine.

Before compression rate was between 1.7 - 2.5

Backup job size is about 450gb.

I am using BackupExec 12.5

Nothing changed on the system to trigger this.

Is there anything can be done to fix this?

Drive firmware version is D22W.

Hardware compresion is enabled by default, is the backup software the responsible of sending the signal to use it.

Perform the test with Library and Tape Tools, it will use hardware compression.

Re: Hardware compression does not work on Ultrium 3-SCSI tape drive.

Hardware compression is working on smaller backup job throw week and does not work for larger backup job. I am sure if I run test using diagnostic tools it will work.

Hardware compression is configured inside Backupexec software and in configuration for tapedrive driver.

Sure I have three option here: device, driver, software.

I am looking for your thoughts what could be the likely source of problem.

Hi,

I will check the Backup job settings for which the compression is not working. You have an opton to enable or disable Hardware compression for the pirticular job in Backup exec.

I checked those settings they are fine. I played around with hardware only and harware then software with out any luck.

This job worked fine for an year beofer compression quit, nothing changed on the system except amount of data to backup.

Jamal,

I know this is a VERY old thread, but did you find a solution to this problem? I have a similar problem I've been unable to solve.

Thanks

Re: Hardware compression does not work on Ultrium 3-SCSI tape drive.

I never was able to regain previous compression rate. But cituation improoved.
First I deleted backup job in Backupexec and created new one from scratch, including selection list. It improved average compression from 1:1 to 1:1.4. I also changed SCSI terminator, without any effect.

Year later when I started recycling old backup tapes I noticed that compression performance on old tapes, purchase in a first batch, is better than on newer purchased batch. Both of them obsolutely the same HP tapes with the same part number. On older taped I have compression of 1:1.6

Make you own conclusions.

Re: Hardware compression does not work on Ultrium 3-SCSI tape drive.

Hello John Daoust

I ran HP Storage Works Library and Tape tools which confirmed that the drive was faulty.

HP then replaced the drive under warranty and backup now works.
