HP Storageworks 1/8 Unknown Error

Hi.

Can someone please assist me.

We purchased a HP Storageworks 1/8 G2 Ultrium 920 Tape Autoloader.

With this hardware we use Symantec Backup Exec 21.5.

Every now and again we recieve errors of failed backups with an "Unknown Error"

I logged a support call with Symantec and they refered me to a Document

http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/312076.htm

"Further investigation revealed that the common factor between in all of the reported cases with these errors was the presence of the HP Insight Storage Agents software. After performing modifications to the HP software, users began seeing successful tape operations"

Does anyone know with Modification to make in the HP Insight Storage Agent.

I requested this information from the Symantec engineer but he was unable to assist.

Can someone here please assist us.

Thanks in advance.

Re: HP Storageworks 1/8 Unknown Error

Hi Marcus, I hope you're doing well.

I will suggest applying this changes in your server. This applies for all Windows Servers:

- Start Removable Storage Service, Stop it and then disable it. Also create a new Registry Fix using a DWORD value set to 0 called "AutoRun" in drivers of Symantec. See link below:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/842411

Apply fix in:
halfinchVRTS
tpfilter
hplto
hpuln32

Follow this path in "regedit" and you will find the drivers mentioned above:
\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services

- Verify if you have under Control Panel a software called HP Management Agents, if yes, disable "fiber agent tape" feature. See link below:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&objectID=c01229672&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN

- If HP Management Agents is installed, disable the following Services from Windows:
* HP Insight NIC
* HP Insight Foundation
* HP Insight Storage
* HP Insight Server
* HP Insight Event Notifier

This should resolve your issue.

Re: HP Storageworks 1/8 Unknown Error

Hi Vernny.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm having issue following the http://support.microsoft.com/kb/842411

Im in the registry,
\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum

I see that there is a class called TapeDrive.
And service called "halfinchVRTS"
If i then navigate to
\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\halfinchVRTS

I find a string value called 0 and value data = "SCSI\Sequential&Ven_HP&Prod_Ultrium_3-SCSI\6&5cf3e4b&0&000200"

Then it goes on saying...

"Locate the subkey that corresponds to your storage device, and then right-click the subkey."

Where do i locate this subkey?

Am i missing something here?

Please note this is Windows Server 2008 Ent Edition.

Please see attached for a screenshot of what i have so far.

Re: HP Storageworks 1/8 Unknown Error

Hi,

Navigate through this path:
\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\halfinchVRTS

Then:
- Right-click halfinchVRTS
- Select "new" and then "DWORD" value
- Type "AutoRun" and save it
- Verify that value is set to 0

Search for the other entries and apply same changes.

At the end, halfinchVRTS, tpfilter, hplto, and hpuln32 should have a DWORD value key named AutoRun with value set to 0.

Thanks,
Vernny D.

Re: HP Storageworks 1/8 Unknown Error

Thanks for the update.

Just something that you should note.

This server has Windows 2008 Ent Edition 64x
with Hyper-V

Attached to that server is the HP storageworks autoloader.

For some reason i get an error if i start any of my virtual servers.

But the minute i shutdown the autoloader and keep it off my virtual Server start up without any issues...
