Kernel Panic with mt command on RHEL 4 Update 3 for C5683A

Dear friends, please help us.

I have an Oracle Database Server Using RedHat Enterprise Linux 4 (Nahant Update 3).

Then I am using HP StorageWorks USB tape as part of my backup strategy.

I am using this command to backup my rman backup to tape:
mt -f /dev/nst0 rewind
tar -cvf /dev/nst0 /oradata/*1
tar -cvf /dev/nst0 /orarman/*1
mt -f /dev/nst0 rewind
mt -f /dev/nst0 eject

Why this causing kernel panic? Is there someone out there encounter the same problem?

It is not always so, sometime it is a success. Sometime the server just died (panic).

Then I stop using the tape. But it is still attached to my server. Just turn it on.

To my dismay!! even I do not use the Tape (Just plug it in, and turn it on).
This caused my server to down !!!!
But I cannot find any message in my /var/log/

Is there any conflict. Or this configuration is not supported at all.

Or maybe, we cannot attached this USB tape to database server directly? And has to reroute the backup path through another server?

Thank you very much..
