used good clean cartilage before taking backups

You need to differentiate between an issue with your drive and with your tapes. A clean might work and is always worth a try but I'd also suggest running the drive assessment test of LTT (http://www.hp.com/support/tapetools) which will give a go/no go assessment of your drive as long as you can find a spare, trusted tape to run it with.
An LTT support ticket will give a 'warn' for degraded drives/tapes rather than 'poor' so it probably isn't that.
To keep a drive in good condition it needs:
* A clean environment
* Use of good condition media
* New media actually keeps the drive clean so try to rotate tapes to some extent
