LTO3 Unusual behaviour

I have an LTO3 drive using 400/800GB media. Could anyone have an idea as to why this drive successfully backs up data that is 1.2 terabytes.

The tape drive can compress data and if the data is very redundant (e.g. lots of zeroes in an 'empty' database), you can see high compression ratios. These will get lower if you fill the database with real data.

As said above, if you backup a sparse file it could even be larger ... it will not consume much space on tape.

Thanks guys I will investigate this further with my DBA, just seemed so strange especially because there were no errors after the backup.
