Mini SAS to SFP+

Hello,

is MiniSAS Câble SFF-8088 to 4 SFP + SFF-8431 10 Gigabit compatible with HPE MSL 2024 ?

https://cablematic.com/en/products/minisas-cable-sff-8088-to-4-sfp-sff-8431-10-gigabit-1m-FZ061/

the idea is to connect the Tape Library to a non mini sas device , only sfp +1.

Thank you very much

Re: Mini SAS to SFP+

HI,

no this is Infiniband, the Tape uses SAS 6 or 12GB.

You find the right Cable in the HPE StoreEver Compatibility Matrix here: https://www.hpe.com/storage/StoreEverSupportMatrix

Look at Pages 15 & 16.

It depends on your SAS HBA or Raid Controller you want to connect.

Re: Mini SAS to SFP+

Hi Cali,

Thank you for the answer.

I am beginer with Library tapes , actually we need to connect the Library Tape to acronis Backup.

Don't know how to connect the Library msl2024 to the virtual host windows server 2019  (in Nutanix) , through the access switch ( unifi) using sfp+1 port ? or there's another way to do it ?

Thanks a lot

Re: Mini SAS to SFP+

@ServiceDeskBNS

I searched, and this is what I found out. See if this can help you.

To connect a library tape (specifically the MSL2024) to a virtual host running Windows Server 2019 on Nutanix, you'll need to establish a connection between the tape drive and the server. Here's a general outline of the process:

1. Determine the connectivity options: Check the available ports on both the MSL2024 library and the Nutanix server. The MSL2024 typically supports different interfaces, including Fibre Channel (FC) and SAS (Serial Attached SCSI). The Nutanix server may have SFP+ ports for high-speed networking.

2. Identify the interface of the tape library: If your MSL2024 is equipped with a Mini SAS interface, you'll need to convert it to SFP+ to match the available ports on the Nutanix server. Mini SAS and SFP+ are different connection types, so you'll require a suitable adapter or cable to bridge the gap.

3. Obtain a Mini SAS to SFP+ adapter or cable: You'll need to acquire the appropriate adapter or cable that converts the Mini SAS connection from the tape library to an SFP+ connection. This adapter will allow you to connect the library to the SFP+ port on the Nutanix server.

4. Connect the MSL2024 to the Nutanix server: Once you have the Mini SAS to SFP+ adapter or cable, follow these steps:

* Plug one end of the adapter or cable into the Mini SAS port on the MSL2024 tape library.
* Connect the other end of the adapter or cable to the SFP+ port on the Nutanix server's access switch (UniFi switch).

5. Configure the tape library: After physically connecting the tape library to the Nutanix server, you may need to configure the library in the backup software (Acronis Backup). This process involves identifying the library within the software and configuring the appropriate backup settings.

6. Test the connection: Verify that the connection between the tape library and the server is working by performing a test backup or restore operation using Acronis Backup. Ensure that the software recognizes the library and can access the tape drive within it.

Note: The specific steps may vary depending on the exact hardware and software configurations you have. It's always recommended to consult the user manuals or documentation provided with your equipment for detailed instructions tailored to your setup.

Hope this helps! Let me know

Re: Mini SAS to SFP

I apologize for the confusion. If you're unable to find a Mini SAS to SFP+ adapter, it suggests that direct conversion from Mini SAS 8088 to SFP+ might not be possible. In that case, you may need to consider alternative options to connect the MSL2024 tape library to the Nutanix server. Here are a few alternatives you can explore:

  1. Fibre Channel (FC) connectivity: Check if your MSL2024 library supports Fibre Channel connections. If it does, you can connect the library to a Fibre Channel switch and then connect the switch to the Nutanix server using Fibre Channel adapters.

  2. SAS connectivity: If your MSL2024 library has SAS interfaces, you can use SAS connectivity to connect the library to the Nutanix server. Ensure that the server also has SAS ports available. You'll need a SAS cable to establish the connection.

  3. Network-attached storage (NAS): If the tape library supports NAS connectivity, you can connect it to the local network and configure it as a network-attached storage device. The Nutanix server can then access the tape library over the network.

  4. Consult with vendors: Reach out to the vendors or manufacturers of the MSL2024 tape library, Nutanix server, and any other relevant equipment. They might be able to provide guidance on suitable connectivity options or recommend specific adapters or converters that can facilitate the connection.

Remember, the availability of connectivity options depends on the specific hardware models you're working with. It's important to check the documentation /support resources provided by the manufacturers for accurate and detailed information regarding your equipment.

Re: Mini SAS to SFP

If you have an MSL 2024 with SAS Tape Drive, the only Option is a SAS HBA or SAS Raid Controller for attachment.

Check the Tape GUI or send a Picture of the Tape Connector.

There is no possibility for iSCSI, NAS, or FC connection if your Tape is a SAS Tape.

Re: Mini SAS to SFP

Hello,

Another question please .

SAS Raid controller can be changed by FC controller on the tape drive ?

thanks

Re: Mini SAS to SFP

If you have a Tape with SAS Connection you need a SAS HBA in the Server.

If you have a Tape with FC Connection you need a FC HBA in the Server.

You can not change the Connection Type on the Tape, this is fixed.
