MSL 2024 - Error 45 occured

Hi,

Everytime my BackupExec 10d finishes a backup, I get an email saying:

Error : 45 00 15
Description : Removal Locked
This message was generated automatically from
HP MSL G3 Series

The backup is successful and I have done a restore to make sure - what does this error mean and do I need to worry since my backups are running just fine? (This unit is about a week old).

Re: MSL 2024 - Error 45 occured

This message indicates that the host software had issued a "Preven Media Removal" (PMR) command to the drive which means that the drive can not eject the tape.

While the Prevent Media Removal was set, a move command was sent to the library to take the tape out of the drive. The drive will not eject the tape while PMR is set so the library is unable to complete the move and returns an error to the application. At the same time it sends an email notification to the administrator.

The error message returned to the host contains the reason for the error. If the host software gets that error code it should clear the PMR setting and retry. If the tape is back in the storage slot after you get this message then your backup application has followed the correct recovery procedure and the backup will have completed normally except for the message warning you of an command that couldn't be completed.

This message never indicates a problem with the library or with the data on the tape so your backup is fine.

If BE is sending the PMR to the drive it should be keeping track of when the drive is locked and unlock the drive before sending a move.

If RSM is running on the server it may be sending the PMR to the drive without BE knowing so when BE tried to eject the tape it gets an error. Check to make certain that RSM is not running on the server.

If RSM is not running it is possible some other application is locking the drive.
